I think it's beginning to look something like this:

    NRL

    1. Anthony Minichiello
    2. Sam Perrett
    3. Mitch Aubusson
    4. Phil Graham
    5. Shaun Kenny-Dowall
    6. Todd Carney
    7. Mitchell Pearce
    8. Frank Paul-Nuusuala
    9. Jake Friend
    10. Jason Ryles
    11. Willie Mason
    12. Nate Myles
    13. Braith Anasta (c)

    14. Lopini Paea
    15. Anthony Cherrington
    16. Jared Wearea-Hargreaves
    17. James Aubusson

That team looks just about right. I can see Brian Smith giving Shaun Kenny-Dowall a chance as it's his first chance to work with him and hopefully he can give the kid confidence because when he is on his game, I wouldn't swap him for anybody else. Jared Wearea-Hargreaves is a welcome addition to the pack and will add a bit of spice. James Aubusson will get the bench spot ahead of Ben Jones because he is a specialist hooker. The team looks pretty strong across the bored. Braith Anasta will play a very big part in this side. If he is successful at lock, it will allow the halves to stick together instead of resorting Anasta back to five-eighth and Carney to another position.

    Newtown Jets

    1. Luke Towers
    2. Steve Naughton
    3. Kane Linnett
    4. Sonny Tuigamala
    5. Sisa Waqa
    6. Nick Kouparitsis (c)
    7. Tavite Vatuvei
    8. Ray Moujalli
    9. Luke Letele
    10. Martin Kennedy
    11. Mose Masoe
    12. Daniel Conn
    13. Tom Symonds

    14. Khalid Deeb
    15. Aiden Guerra
    16. Dylan Sharp
    17. Brad Takairangi

This is a really young side but there is a lot of potential in this team. A lot of them will get a chance in the top grade and some will stay there during the year for extended stints through injury or otherwise. I expect Mose Masoe, Martin Kennedy, Daniel Conn and Tom Symonds to step up into first grade regularly. The team looks pretty solid overall but are desperately lacking good halves. Luke Towers will push hard for a gig in the NRL at some stage during the year.

    Toyota Cup

    1. Hughie Stanley
    2. JP Du Plessis
    3. Ryan Williamson
    4. Cheyse Blair
    5. Fine Moeakiola
    6. Ben Jones
    7. Jacob Miller
    8. Isaac Maliota
    9. Samuel Brunton (c)
    10. Samson Manu'a
    11. John Leiataua
    12. Joseph Leilua
    13. Boyd Cordner

    14. Tom Pelo
    15. Olireti Samuelu
    16. Ethan Lowe
    17. Jerome Leolahi

Great team on paper but whether it is shown on the field is another story. Some of these boys will play NRL during the year if there are any injuries. John Leiataua is with fulltime so I expect he will start and that's why Jerome Leolahi has gone back to the bench. Our backrow are all with the full-time squad at least for the off-season and our backs are lightning. You've got the likes of Williamson, Blair, Moeakiola, Stanley and Du Plessis who can cause massive headaches for the opposition and topped off by class halves in Jacob Miller and Benny Jones. Awesome team and should do very well.

      Way ahead of Ben Jones?

Murray played what 5 games in the Toyota Cup this year... I know he had big wraps on him especially by the Bulldogs but he hasn't lived up to them.

      • I think at the moment Brad Murray is ahead of Jacob Miller and on par with Ben Jones as a 6, although IMO Jones is a halfback. I think Murray struggled this season because he was just returning from a major knee operation and found it hard to find a bit of form, especially because our NYC team wasn't doing too well. If it were up to me, I'd have Brad Murray as the NYC 6 and Ben Jones as the 7. Murray's strengths is his long passing game and his kicking game and as a 6 he can do that. He hasn't been all that effective at the NYC because they keep playing him as halfback where he has too much control. It's no coincidence that our SG Ball team won last season because he played at five-eighth. He is the link between our backline and our forward pack in short. We didn't use our backs last season at all.

Don't like your 1st grade backrow mate

We will leak a lot of points with only 1 backrower capable of doing a lot of tackling and the rest more attacking in Anasta,Mason and Cherrington

          • Anyone that played Toyota cup for the Roosters this year has a huge leap to be ready to play NRL. Basically they were terrible, while there were some moments of good play, as consisent players most were rubbish

            • I agree they were terrible for most of the season, but in some odd games, they definitely performed close to their potential and if I remember correctly, came within a whisker of defeating Melbourne in Round 25. I was at that game and the boys were superb and got me wondering where had that been all year. Even though we finished second last, there is no doubting the amount of talent our NYC sides have. I've highlighted before that our 2008 NYC side was also terrible again finishing second last, but still produced the likes of Tom Symonds, James Tamou, Antonio Winterstein, Ben Jones, Jake Friend, Stanley Waqa, Rohan Ahern, Luke Towers, Sandor Earl and Ryan Williamson which is pretty bloody impressive IMO. I can see the potential in our NYC team next year turning into results, simply because the culture Smith will bring to the club will be invaluable for these young guys. Even Danny Buderus who did not like Smith, commented that the culture Smith bought to the club showed be kept, along with his main philosophies. That to me says a lot about where the club is heading, both in the NRL and in the juniors.

              • on paper we have a very very solid foward pack for next year.

                8.hargraves
                9.friend
                10.ryles
                11.myles
                12.mason
                13. anasta

myles, rlyes and friend to tackle to house down, hargraves and mason to hit it up hard, and anasta to throw in a bit of structure, ball movement and class. i think now that anasta will likely be moving a lot, mason can be a lot more utilised around the edges where he is at his best.

                i expect big things!!!

                • ??? Hargraves at prop?

For starts i think could be used as an impact player of bench and put him into the back-row.. Thats just me so don't go swearing please.

I think he is a prop as well but agree he should atleast start the year from the bench with FPN taking over that starting frontrow birth. here is my pack:
                    8. FPN
                    9. Friend
                    10. Ryles
                    11. Myles
                    12. Anasta
                    13. Baiteri (maubs will start off at centre imo)

                    14. Paea
                    15. Mason
                    16. JWH
                    17. Jones

                    • i think we should see how hargraves go atm in four nations. he doesnt look out place at all, and atm looks way better then paea or nuasalla.

however i do agree he may best be used as an impact player.
also, i would like to see maubs in the second row is anasta is at lock or at lock if anasta is at 5/8. imo he is being wasted in the centres, as we are not getting as much as we could defensivley out of him.

                      • Guys, we will almost definitely see:

                        8. Ryles
                        9. Friend
                        10. Paea
                        11. Mason
                        12. Myles
                        13. Anasta (or Aubusson IF Carney is at fullback)

                        14. Jones/Kouparitsas
                        15. Symonds/Cherrington
                        16. JWH
                        17. Nuuausala

I very much doubt we will see anything much different to that. I expect that Kouparitsas will be competing for Jones' spot, after Smith stated he wants Koops as a ball-playing utility.

Don't expect to see Baiteri there, word has it that he has signed a duel contract with Roosters/Jets. So I don't expect him to figure in first grade immediately.

Jaubs would be competing for Jones' spot more than Koups I would think.

                          • I cant see why some people are suggesting Carney as a fullback. He aint anywhere near a fullback IMO even more so when you consider we have perrett and Mini who play there. What makes you think he would make a fullback? Can he catch a bomb? He is an out and out 5/8th for mine

                            Comment

                            • Imo i wouldn't mind Carney at fullback. He has all the attributes to become a great fullback, speed, support etc. Only thing i would be worried about is him under the high bombs.

                              Comment

                              • He doesn't have the positional play to be a fullback. Somebody like Thurston and Kimmorley would find space most times than not and that would mean that our sets would start on the backfoot. I think positioning is underestimated a lot but the fact is that a lot of good fullbacks have this part of their game downpat. Carney would take a while to accustomise to this and we don't have that much time, plus we've got great fullbacks in Sam Perrett and Anthony Minichiello, both who have played fullback at international level.
