Does anyone know how to be a Football Club Member rather than a Leagues Club Member?

A mate just became a member of the Parra footy club rather than leagues club and he said it was a bit of a closed shop for most clubs.

    Any thoughts would be appreciated

      Morls,
best of luck mate. It's definetely a closed shop as far as our club is concerned. They are far more warming to having you on-board as a season ticket holder than a financial member of the football club (attend AGM's and cast your vote).
From what i know, numbers are capped due to an outdated constitution.
There are approx <200 financial members, the majority being ex players, giving credence to its exclusive boys club image. As far as The Chairman and his board are concerned, this is exactly how they prefer it to be because the chances of being challenged/voted out are miniscule. Politis has reined since 1993.
To add strength to what i have mentioned above, take a look at Souths, Bulldogs and Parra. Since each of them changed their constitution and encouraged fans to become Football Club members their numbers have grown and members now have the power to vote for change.
Some examples include; a newly elected Dogs board axed Noad & replaced him with Greenberg (TURNED OUT TO BE A WISE DECISION), Fitzgerald and his croonies ousted...their new board appointing Osborne (VERY ASTUTE) and our arch rival Souths voted for privatisation, allowing Crowe/Holmes to take control (THEY WOULD HAVE SUNK OTHERWISE).
The importance of belonging cannot be underestimated especially when it comes to such matters like relocation or name change i.e Bondi Breakers/Roosters to name a few. That's why i believe there needs to be a strong push to break down the barriers. Our existence depends on it!

      • Agree Gman. But why would those at the top even consider changing, if it opens up the possibility for their downfall

Exactly my point Adam. Very much like our "fat cat" ARL/CRL/QRL officials (who oppose the independant commission proposal) & most, if not all of our politicians...THE STATUS, THE POWER TRIP & ALL THEM FRINGE BENEFITS. Too hard to sacrifice and part with.

The amazine part is that for all of his interference in day to day football club matters, all his stupid, knee jerk, over priced player signings, the deserved "transit lounge" reputation that he's given the club, and the aforementioned Freemason like secrecy that surrounds him and his untouchable board colleagues, some deluded Rooster fans still want this absolute cancer in charge.

            Farkin unbelievable

get out there and get us a major sponsor, you farkin "corporate heavyweights"

Would you want Ray Price running your club?

Ray Price certainly doesn't "run" Parramatta

The problem with Politis is that he can't stay out of football operational matters. Like signing players. Nothing to do with him, or the board. All the board should be concerned with is:

                - Overseeing the overall financial position of the club

                - Assessing the performance of Noyce

                - Utilising their business savvy and corporate profile to assist with matters like GETTING US A MAJOR SPONSOR

Politis sent Bouris to interview Chris Anderson. Successful businessman yes. But what on earth qualifies Bouris to assess the merits of a potential rugby league coach?

Who gets quoted when Parramatta are in the press? Osborne. Not Roy Spagnolo, or Price. Brisbane? Cullen. not Daryl Sommerville (ever heard of him?) Melbourne? Waldron. Not Mick Moore (who?). St George? Doust, not Warren Lockwood. Gold Coast? Searle, not Paul Broughton

Noyce is rarely heard, just as was the case with Canavan and Gurr. It's just Politis, Politis, Politis

He's a dictator who wants to call every shot, and as pointed out by Gman, he runs a virtual closed shop whereby he and his board colleagues are untouchable

It's an appalling state of affairs

                • Well I want in

I want Football Club Membership and I want to be on the board.

Politis might have done a lot for the Club but it doesnt mean he should avoid scrutiny, especially when e have a year like we did last year.

How does this situation come about where one is "selected" for football club membership?

                  • I would pay to be a member of the club because that would at least give me a voice, however small, in the running of the club, and it would also confer a stronger sense of belonging and ownership. Being just a season ticket holder gives me no voice and a weaker sense of belonging. Is this how it's done in the VFL?

                      Morls,
you're starting point is by telephoning the Football Club office.
From experience, be prepared to jump thru hoops to get to the finish line. Firstly, the girls will chat to you and aim to dissuade you.
The Application For Membership form they promise to mail you doesn't happen, in the hope you drop off and bother no more. It took my mate 3 follow up calls but still nothing. So after my suggestion he personally visited their SFS front office and grabbed a form.
Now here's the stumbling block that gets many. You are required to obtain 2signatures from existing football club members - one being the proposer, the other being the seconder. But how the bloody hell can you get signatures if you don't know any members? That's why it's so clicky and exclusive.
Fortunately my mate knew a mate etc.....After lodging it (again i suggest you personally visit and do this because you don't want to be told the cheque must have got lost in the mail ) you are req'd to pay an application fee and wait for three years before you're elegible to vote or be accepted i believe.
I hope there are some determined fans out there who want to become football club members and are prepared to undertake the above process.

I have no doubt that in years to come members will be required to cast their vote on some serious issues which may impact on our clubs future.
I hope to one day be taking my grandkids to watch the tri-colours.

                        Lone,
The AFL model is by far the fairest and most reasonable.
Football club membership is tied-up with season ticket membership. That's probably why they have high numbers.
There might be a waiting period i.e 2-3 years before you can vote but at least there's that sense of truly belonging. I'm hoping Rugby League follows suit.

Thanks theGman, it seems the AFL have the right idea and the NRL have some catching up to do in this area - I live in hope.

Lucky for the NRL they have the better game, as the AFL outdoes them on everything else
