Hands is flattened by tendon injury

JUNEE rugby league star Matthew Hands is holding onto a glimmer of hope, after being delivered a "devastating" injury blow which could potentially rule him out for the season.

Hands was training with the Sydney Roosters' first grade team under coach Brian Smith more than a week ago when he suffered a ruptured Achilles tendon during a warm up defensive drill.

Initial talks with Sydney specialists and surgeons spelled the end of the year for Hands, but the talented playmaker yesterday revealed he could make a return to the field before the end of the season.

"I was first told I could be out for six to nine months, ruling me out for the whole season," he said.

"Now they are saying I could be back in back at sort of the six-month mark so I would be back in time for the last month of round games and finals if we made it."

The highly rated young player, who has been lauded by Roosters coaching staff, was looking for a big year in 2010 after battling through a season disrupted by injury in 2009.

"Last year was pretty injury-ravaged and I am pretty shattered that I have started the year like this and I won't be able to start the year," he said.

"Last year I tore my quad (quadricep) and I had ongoing problems through the year with it playing up," he said.

"I had been pushing really hard to have a good season this year."

Hands has made a brief return to his hometown of Junee after undergoing surgery in Sydney last Wednesday but will make his way back to Sydney in the next couple of days.

"I'll probably be heading back up soon because I will be back at uni (university)," he said.

"I am doing PE (physical education) teaching at Sydney University, at least it is something that will keep me busy."

Hands is on crutches for the next six weeks before he will be able to place any weight on the injured Achilles. "When I get off the crutches I will walk around with a limp for probably six weeks before I can start slow rehab at the 12-week mark," he said. Hands was building for a big year with the Roosters' Toyota Cup team and had been tipped to be one of the players to watch in 2010. "I was going to be playing Toyota Cup again this year and we were looking like we would be better this year," he said. "We didn't have a real good year last year but things were looking good."

Terrible news confirmed by a lower grade player.
Boyd has torn his anterior cruciate ligament which effectively wipes him out for most of the year.
This poor bloke deserves better. Hopefully his good times are ahead of him.
Wishing Boyd a successful & speedy recovery.

        • Maybe it is the case they lacked conditioning from previous seasons or it is just really really bad luck !

So, the list is now looking like this ...

                        Naughton
                        Cordner
                        JWH
                        Hands
                        Anasta

Keep this rate of injuries up and depth will be shot.

Out of the 5 of those, only JWH & Anasta would be seen as NRL regulars, so it's not as bad as it seems.

I'm not sure whether Hands and Naughton would have seen much NRL in the short term anyway.

Although 'wonderboy Cordner' was apparently going to debut for the Roosters, NSW and Australia all in one year according to some.

This is true. Naughton is depth only, I wouldn't feel any different if Luke Towers, Kane Linnett or Sonny Tuigamala were injured. Cordner was expected to play in SG Ball/NYC for most of the year, and debut in first grade late in the year or during the Origin period, but not become a permanent fixture yet, especially because he is only 18. Hands is still NYC age too, and was pretty far away from first grade selection anyway, especially with Anasta, Pearce, Carney, Foran, Jones and Aubusson all far more qualified halves options than him.

JWH and Anasta are the only big losses - we have the depth to cover for Anasta (Carney to five-eighth, Minichiello to fullback) but JWH provides some serious grunt and aggression that we really need.
