  • Lote seeks pay day before switch

LOTE TUQIRI's immediate future may not be as cut and dried as rugby union or rugby league - he could be playing both codes next year.

The Herald understands Tuqiri is considering playing rugby union in France throughout the rugby league off-season before joining an NRL club a few months into the next NRL season - and at least one club is believed to be open to the idea.

Much of the speculation about Tuqiri, sacked by the ARU for breaching protocol by reportedly inviting a woman back to his hotel room, has centred on whether he would pursue the big-money deals in France or take a pay cut to rejoin his former code.

But Tuqiri may be tempted to have the best of both worlds by signing with Bayonne, the French club to which he has been most closely linked, before joining an NRL team after the French Top 14 competition ends in April/May next year.

Tuqiri has held talks with officials from Sydney Roosters and Wests Tigers. And the former Brisbane Bronco is believed to have raised the prospect of a mid-season start in the NRL with the Tigers, who are believed to be considering it as an option.

The Tigers were at the centre of a union-league tug-of-war with their star player Benji Marshall earlier this year. The five-eighth had hoped to sign a deal with a Japanese rugby club before returning to the Tigers but that proposal prompted NRL chief executive David Gallop to effectively ban him from doing so.

Gallop last night said the two scenarios were different and he would, ''on the face of it'', allow Tuqiri to carry out the cross-code switch if he wished to.

''It would be great to have Lote back playing rugby league,'' Gallop said. ''He just has to be registered by the 30th of June. What we said before with a player like Benji Marshall is he can't be under contract to both codes at the same time. He [Tuqiri] couldn't sign with a rugby league club and then sign with rugby union. As long as it wasn't a contrived arrangement … we'd just have to be satisfied it wasn't a case of a player being under contract with both codes. He could be under contract with rugby union and do a deal with an NRL club.''

Tuqiri remains keen to stay in Sydney, given his family has settled in Birchgrove. Curiously, he asked on his public Twitter account last Friday how the Tigers were faring against Parramatta.

    ----

So Lote could sign with both a union and league club. Not sure if I'd like this if he's gonna sign with the Roosters! I think the off-season is VERY important for the Roosters this time around (there's gonna be lots of changes, and we need to develop a culture.)

Having some guy from Union coming in as our saviour just before the season starts; he'd have no idea how to play modern league (its changed a LOT since his days as a star!!) and wouldn't have grown up with the new Roosters culture.

So in short... if he's considering the Roosters, I'd like Lote to sign NOW or never. No Union in France (make millions) then hit up the Roosters for more cash... we need team players, not individuals.

it would give us a bit of midseason depth, as long as we're not paying stupid money for him

Would we consider the fact that he's making millions over in Frace when signing him?

i.e. "mate... we let you make $1000 000 over in France rather than training with us in the off-season... take 50-100 grand for the season and we'll hire you... 1.1 million dollars a season isn't bad compared to most NRL players mate!"

I don't agree with him doing that if he comes to the Roosters. Pre-season is very important and if he is over in France playing a totally different sport, that is a massive problem. Definitely not a fan of this proposal.

Agreed... I'm one of the few guys on this forum who likes both Union and League... I watch both every week and yeah... especially nowadays the games and tactics used are really different. Playing Union in France wouldn't be good preparation for playing in the NRL... the rules and tactics change every season, and no matter how big, fast or technically skilled you are, unless you know the current trends in terms of rules and tactics then you'll be lost on the field.

Sonny Bill's an example of this actually. Decent League player (although over-rated I think...) for his first season in Union he had no idea... kept dropping his shoulder on people and doing high tackles... still had the big hits in him, but conceded waaay too many penalties.

Tahu... got COMPLETELY pawned by RSA... everybody ran at him and made line breaks because he had no idea how to do a union tackle, and kept doing pussy shirt-grab tackles, hoping his mates would arrive. Was totally lost when they yelled out "WE CAN'T JOIN YOU IN THE TACKLE!!!!! FORM A MAUL MATE!!!!"

          ---

Same would happen with Lote if he went to League I think. Tackling has changed so much since he was a star league player (nearly a decade ago!) The rules, ref'ing pointers and tactics have changed a lot. He'd need at least a good off-season training with the boys in order to be any use.

just proves he is not a loyal club man.

if he truly wanted to play for the roosters, putting money aside, the least he could do would be to have an offseason and train with us.

we dont need people like this at the club, we are moving in the opposite direction and dont need his servies.

                .
i have a gripe with this comment.

How can you honestly expect a player, as soon as they sign with the roosters to be a loyal clubman.

You have to remember one of our loyalist players, Freddy, came to the Roosters during the super league war when money was king, do you really think he had the roosters best interest in mind when he came over????

the only ones you can say are loyal clubmen from the start are ones like ricko, maubs and hopefully tommy symonds, those sorts of players that have come through the lower grades and have been raised by the roosters.

Some people may say that ricko was a loyal clubman, but look where he is now............

you do not become a loyal clubman the instant you sign, you cannot expect a player to love the roosters the second the sign as much as the fans do.

The NRL wont allow it. Benji Marshall already tried it and it was knocked back by the NRL ... he had to choose one over the other. They wont allow it just for Lote.

Could not possibly agree more. He's slower than SKD these days as well.

I think players like SKD and Hauraki make us more of a laughing stock.

                          Amen!

That one good game that SKD played after he had been dropped (then luckily recalled due to an injury) is clear evidence that the shithead is having a laugh out there on the wing and is clearly not trying in every game.

An absolute pointless venture getting him for any more than $50K
