I agree he could captain the side standing on his ear, but I don't think being a captain is high on his agenda, if he stays for another season, and I think he will, he'll stay because he wants too, not just to be the captain. I said a couple of times pre-season, I think the only real option we have as a captain, was James Maloney, he's going to be here for 3 years minimum, is well liked by the players, has just about been our man of the match in every game this season, is calm under pressure, would have a good relationship with the ref,s, during the game, and offers stability.
In naming Maloney as captain, it opens up the perfect position for Boyd Cordner, to be given the sole Vice Captaincy role, to do his apprenticeship under Maloney, and then be ready to take over, as hopefully a long term captain of the Roosters. Forget all this 5 co captains bullshit, that's rubbish, make your 5 senior players, the Players Board, to keep everything running smooth, but you only need one of each.

Fittler was committed to our club, he didn't rock up to pre-season training in February and wasn't signing one year contracts.

You're kidding aren't you with that comparison?

I like Sonny, he's been nothing but professional and respectful since arriving at our club and we get him at a great price because we let him play Union and box during the off-season. It's a fair trade off but he's in no position to be captaining our club, our proud club. It's a slap in the face to the likes of Freddy, Fitzy, Ricko, Mini & even Braith who all genuinely cared about our club and put their heart and soul into the club.

If he wants to commit long term to our club then maybe we can entertain the idea but not until then.

It is a shame you are not supportive of Minichiello Your above post sums him up to a tee

Offering SBW the captaincy will not sway his decision in the slightest, why would it and would he want it anyway. An extra 200k would help keep him here if he is contemplating anything.

I'd find it unnervingly shallow for anyone at this club to barter the captaincy as some sort of carrot. If so, Braith must have lowered its prestige far more than I anticipated.

SBW is an amazing player; a rare mix of footballing genius in an athlete's body, but he's as self-interested as they come. Calling him a mercenary isn't an insult when it resonates as fact. Since he left the Bulldogs his foremost concern has been himself which is perfectly okay in my opinion, because it is always to his benefit if the teams he plays for do well.

However, there is a sizable difference from being a role model in professionalism to being held up as a leader and representative of a club. Captain's take a lot of responsibly on their shoulders for the success and growth of their team both on and off the field. It should be a position of pride. Let's be honest, Sonny's not likely to give two ****s about us when he heads off the the Rugby World Cup.

Agreed. I reckon it will go to Pearce.

The captain should be best leader for the team and I would say that man is SBW

WTF? Come off it 6. You sound like a Daily Telegraph reporter. I would have imagined most have moved past these kind of cliched attempts at interpreting Sonny-Bill's actions and motivations. If many other NRl players were half as committed as him they would have better careers than they are likely to have.

SBW doesn't need the captaincy it's not as if he's going to play any better or be any more of a leader or influence on the players, everyone is inspired and learning from him already.I would like JWH as captain after Mini but he doesn't play for the full 80 min so my pick would be Pearce, one of our main playmakers who has been with the club for ages and has rep experience, and will be around for sometime yet.

$BW is a completely different beast to the average player,so if the captaincy is what he wants to commit long term then give it to him..

He is the best player we've had since Freddy..He can win games on his own..

Players like him are irreplaceable so you do whatever it takes to hold on to them..IMO..
