I reckon it needs to be punted , and the Nrl admit they got it wrong , go back to jersey flegg under 21s Nsw Cup as the true NRL res grade , ive watched alot of 20s games this year , the standards appalling , its just my opinon but its breeding bad habits , the defensive percentages of most of these teams leaves alot to be desired , no one has been able to tell me why the defense averages in this comp are so high , from memory 1 team last year had over 600 points scored against them like WTF, grapplers and shirt pullers , not the ideal platform for a 1st grader thoughts?

It's been discussed here a few times. The "three grades at the ground on the day" thing is over -
1. doesn't work for Friday or Monday night games
2. Is too expensive to fly 3 teams around the country and NZ
3. three games is too much strain on the major grounds
IMO, we need to make the Holden Cup Under 22s with up to four open age spots per game. This gives an (imperfect) compromise between Reggies and U20s.

If the younger kids are good enough, they can still step up to Reggies.
1. The Holden Cup has a "personal development" side to it - the kids all need to work or study and I reckon this is an important element
2. The gap may then just go the other way - right now the gap from U20s to first grade is too big, if you just make it Reggies then potentially the gap from park footy/SG Ball becomes too great and we end up damaging the pipeline.

The kids who don't make reggies can then go play either bundy cup, nsw cup, qld cup etc. clubs can stil affiliate with teams like the jets and Mounties and Wenty. Those kids that aren't up to reggies will filter onto those affiliated teams.
It can work if the league want to make it work. They can still televise the games if they play 20's where nsw cup is played.
Now news limited is gone I hope the commission is looking into fixing the lower tiers of footy

Hopefully common sense prevails and us league diehards get to enjoy the return of all 3 grades on game day like it used to be i.e -
11.15am U20s
1pm Reserve grade/NSW Cup
3pm 1st grade

Test cricket goes for 5 days, 6 hours a day minimum, they play for 30 hours in spikes with shorter grass covering and I don't see ovals being ripped to shreds.
Just doesn't happen.
They will sprout a billion excuses, the powers that used to be, NewsFilth, the real reason is $$$$.
As always.

they should lift the age restriction to 21 or 22 - it will improve the standard and in all fairness, most players that are good enough for first grade are ready at 21 or 22 if not earlier. NSW cup is serving a purpose. In a lot of respects you cant have your cake and eat it - on the one hand, we are trying to keep teams like Newtown, the bears alive by allowing us and souths to use them as a feeder team so if you re-introduce reserve grade, those clubs effectively collapse.

I don't see the justification of keeping a few dead clubs alive in a badly run half arsed reserves comp that they could have anyways and did have called the Metro Cup.
Doesn't make sense.
