Fitzgibbon goes out a winner after year to forget
    September 10, 2009

HIS final game ended in a defeat that gave his side the wooden spoon, but Craig Fitzgibbon's 10-season career with the Sydney Roosters has finished on a high after he was named player of the year for a record fourth time.

Fitzgibbon became the first player to be awarded the Jack Gibson Medal four times, a fitting end to a career at the club that began in 2000.

Fitzgibbon was presented the award by John Gibson, the son of Jack, after edging out Sam Perrett and Mitchell Pearce. Fitzgibbon, who will play with Hull FC next season, was also named clubman of the year.

Roosters coach Brad Fittler, who will also leave the club after being replaced by Brian Smith, farewelled strength and conditioning coach Ron Palmer, a stalwart of the club for 22 years, during the awards night at Easts Leagues Club.

The Roosters have had a horror season, with poor on-field results leading to the decision to dump club great Fittler, combined with numerous off-field dramas involving a number of players. Fitzgibbon has performed admirably on and off the field throughout.

Congratulations Fitzy. A truly deserved award by a player who played with heart and pride and gave it his all in the Red, White and Blue.

It's a shame that the media could not just write about Fitzy and his award. Why do they have to end a good story on a great player with other issues at the Club.

They forgot the 'Ken Moroney Award' - for the player who excelled in spending countless hours in a police interrogation room.
