  • How do we know this year is different?

2008 Bulldogs get the spoon. New coach, a host of signings and they dominated 2009. Missed out on the minor premiership due to fielding too many players, and missed the GF by being run over by the Hayne Plane. Then in 2010 they went back to mediocre

2009 Easts get the spoon. In comes Smithy, with Carney, Conn, Graham and we reach the Grand Final. Then in the following years we went back to mediocre.

This happens often. Teams aren't going well, then there's a change and they suddenly become good. Big things are predicted, then they flop.

So we come to this year. We all love Robbo. Jenko, Maloney and SBW are great signings. Everyone is playing well. There's good feelings.

How do we know that we're building a Fergiesque ManU or Benny's Brisbane style club? How do we know that we won't collapse next year?

How about this.. in the commentary idk if anyone else heard it but they said the last time Easts had won 5 in a row was 2010. Then before that was 04', 03' and 02'. All in which case we went to a grand final..

        We're on a 5 match winning streak.

I don't think we will see this type of domination again with the enforcement of the salary cap. We did incredibly well to make 4 GFs in 5 years from 2000-2004. Melbourne and Manly have done incredibly well to be so consistant over the last 10 years. Apart from that, every other club has been up and down.

I reckon each club has to build/plan for a 3 year stint at the top and try and jag a GF while you are there.

I'll give you a few reasons why I see this current change as being long term rather than a flash in the pan.

This time we've changed from the top down. Nick is no longer THE decision maker. Ted Hellier is running the marketing, corporate and membership side of the club while Brian Canavan is running the football side. Peter O'Sullivan is head of recruitment and they all report to some guy whose name escapes me. Then comes Nick and the board. This new structure removes the potential to sign and re-sign another "Braith Anasta" simply because he's a wog. Sorry but them's the truth.

We've signed a young coach. Robbo is not only extremely intelligent, he's a very good people manager, which includes the fans cause if you listen to him speak, he talks to us. Sure he's got a couple of superstars, but he's got those superstars playing his style of football, not theirs. Upon his arrival he immediately took charge and flicked Mose, Taka, Symonds, BJ (did I miss anyone?) most probably because they didn't fit his style of defence? And after 10 rounds he's got us as the best attacking and defensive unit in the game! Did I mention he's young.

This is a fundamental change in how we've operated in the past. and the signs are looking good that it's been a successful change. Sure we might slip and slide a bit, but I reckon well be in the top 8 for a long time with this new structure.

            Chook.

Why is there so much melodrama on this website? We have just matched our entire amount of wins last season in the opening 10 weeks and have nos won 5 in a row and 2 extremely tough matches, people should be enjoying this instead of being concerned with potential failure in the coming years.

St George, Manly, Melbourne and to a lessor extent a few years ago Wests were able to put in back to back finals series and South Sydney will again.

Why can't we be like them instead of being failure?

Would you take a premiership this year and 13th next year?

                  I bloody well would!

Sit back and enjoy the ride.

The biggest thing we have this year is attitude. You can see it oozing from the team, especially in defence.

In this competiting to concede 94 points in 10 games is just ludicrously good.

When you consider over half of them came in two games we've concede about 40 points in eight games. Unbelievable.

It appears we have a shrewd coach and he likely the best since Gould - Chook mentions people management by Trent and it was something Gould was good at and I agree totally with Chooks admin comment in how we have changed from the top is the other big difference. Friend, Pearce and others who have been playing 1st grade for sometime now have a coach who they play for and their team mates - it's been a very long time since the Gould days and after the debacle with coach Bennett not signing problems but out of that we are where we are today and I am enjoying watching our style of play and teamwork without expecting a gf win - GO EASTS

We don't, teams do so much video work these days that teams and players are so quickly found out that their weaknesses are exploited and their strengths contained.

It happened to us in 2008
It happened to the dogs after 2009, it happened to Parra after 2009
It happened to us after 2010
It happened to the Warriors after 2011
And now it's arguably happening the dogs again after 2012

Only 50% of top 8 teams remain in the top 8 the following season, this has been the case for the last 5 years. We don't know that this isn't just another flash in the pan but what I will say is the one thing all the teams above have in common is their games were based on attacking football. Manly, Melbourne & St George have been the most consistent sides since 2007... all their success is built on the back of strong defence, that's what I believe may turn out to be different this time around.
