Geez it's funny how people can judge a player based on one or two mistakes which happened at a crucial time. Nobody notices the busy workrate, or the leadership in the pack, or the fact that the Saints pack was based around him.

By the way, that penalty he gave away, that cost St George the game a few years back - did anybody actually watch the game instead of the highlights? Dragons were shot and would of been lucky to escape a try. Like any other player Ryles tried to slow the ruck down. The bloke played hard every time he put a jersey on.

You guys hug FPN and Lopini's nuts, yet they can't master the play of the ball. Let alone lead the pack around. Ryles would be twice the prop then anyone we have now.

Not an uncommon story, he cost ST George more games than he won for them

I imagine 10 minutes from halftime, Roosters winning 10-0 and FPN/Lopini/MAson/Soliola/Waqa screwing up the play of the ball to have the opposition score before the break.

Wait - don't have to imagine it, just look back at 2009 and you will have the grim reality.

Which to our all ready ill disciplined pack, is like treating a wound with salt !

He may provide moments of good play, then back it up with moments of idiocy.

But what the heck, we need something ....so who knows ?

Yeah I'd much prefer a non rejuvenated team playing like the shit they served out this year behind by 30 with a minute to go - as for us having the ball unlikely because the opposition has 70% of possesion and our completion rate is 2/18

So we swap one over the hill hack in O'Merley for another over the hill hack in Ryles...geeeze we are smart are we...

So much for our "youth" policy.

              Chook.

When you think about it, every year since 2007, we have had at least one very experienced prop to try and 'lead' our pack.

In 2007, we purchased Nutley for this sole purpose.

In 2008, we purchased O'Meley to do the same thing, for two seasons.

Now in 2010, we are going to purchase Ryles.

I don't think our staff has faith in our pack to perform without one older hardheaded prop to help them out.

of course not. We have a young side and the presence of an experienced campaigner that roles his sleeves up and shows the way in a tough encounter when youth and inexperience may lose its way is what we need it for. btw, i was thinking as an alternate option, snowden would be a really cheap smart pickup. His stats are incredibly impressive. He averages easily 25 tackles again and is over the 100 mark comfortably. He plays with plenty of heart and aggression and gets the side going forward. I reckon he would be a smart signing maybe instead of ryles so with mase and myles to play the primary leadership roles in the pack

                    Snowden is still young though.

The Sharks can get away with having two very young props in their team because they have Paul Gallen in the backrow, who has plenty of experience.

I don't want Ryles, But hey I did want Nutley & O'Meley & look how they went...

I do agree that we need at least 1 old nut to lead the young'uns.. Smith may be the right bloke to get the best out of Ryles??

Ryles at the moment is easily better than anyhting we have got. Whether he is the right man for us I don't know, but I think he could be good for us. We need some experience in the pack and he is a guy that will go forward all day.

with ryles, he has always had and shown at times mass ability but has ruined as you all say with moments of madness and silly errors/penalties. The days of players retiring on big bucks at easts I think will be gone with smithy. Smithy doesnt take crap and gets the best out of every bloke that takes the field. I expect nothing different in regards to ryles. Also, ryles is looking to come home and LEAVE the big bucks o/s behind because he misses Australia so if he wants to play footy here and has rejected the big bucks then for a change, his motive wont be money as much and i cant see how we can be offering him big bucks anyway considering carney will take omeleys money, graham will take solis and obviously sa is going to be shed to accomodate ryles. If anyone can get the best out of ryles it will be smith and he is already coming with the right attitude being footy NOT money.

Smith is a disciplinarian as well so the errors and silly penalties in ryles' game so if these error/penalties can be recitified smith is the man to do it and aside from bennett, probably the only coach that can. As others have said, he will added some much needed go forward and size as his stats mack put up suggest and will also play an important leadership role up front which could go a long way to making the transition of youngsters into the grade more seemless as well as providing them with a seasoned campaigner as a mentor. Welcome Jase

Ryles is the direct replacement for O'Meley. It is clear that O'Sullivan is a firm believer in always carrying one experienced prop. Since all of our own props (Myles, Paea, Nuuausala, Kennedy, Waerea-Hargreaves, Waqa, Masoe) are young, it is imperative that we have at least one.

2002, we had Lomu, Cayless, Morley and Cusack.

2003, we had Catic/Lomu, Cayless, Morley and Cusack.

2004, we had Catic, Cayless, Morley and Cusack.

2005, we had Catic, Cayless, Morley and Fa'aoso.

2006, we had Hall, Shillington, Morley and Tonga.

2007, we had Nutley, Shillington, Myles and Paea.

2008, we had O'Meley, Shillington, Myles and Paea.

2009, we had O'Meley, Nuuausala, Myles and Paea.

2010, we will have Ryles, Nuuausala, Myles and Paea.

Note that in 2004, 2005 and 2006 we had Morley. In 2007 we had Nutley. In 2008 and 2009 we had O'Meley.
