FORMER Test prop Jason Ryles is set to return to the NRL next season as new Sydney Roosters coach Brian Smith's first big-name recruit. The move coincides with an offer by ''ashamed'' Catalans chairman Bernard Guasch to release any player after last weekend's 34-20 loss to Wakefield but Sin Bin understands Ryles had already been looking to come home. Smith, who started work at the Roosters on Tuesday, has been a long-time fan of Ryles and almost persuaded the former St George Illawarra skipper to sign with Newcastle this season rather than move to France. With the Roosters having lost Craig Fitzgibbon, Mark O'Meley, Iosia Soliola and Shane Shackleton, Smith is believed to have identified to need to sign an experienced prop and centre. Former Storm international Matt King, who helped Warrington to Challenge Cup success last month, is also understood to be eager to return to the NRL next season but the Roosters would be unable to fit him in under the salary cap. Ryles still needs to finalise a release from Catalans but that may not be a problem after Gausch's post-match comments in the dressing room at Perpignan last weekend. ''It's pathetic. For the first time in four years, I am ashamed. I announced this evening in the locker room that all the players were free to go,'' Gausch told French newspaper L'Independant. ''It is better to leave it up to them rather than do anything myself .''

The best thing about that article is that Smith realizes we need an experienced prop and centre.
That means Myles must be destined for the backrow instead of Fitzgibbon. I was expecting:
Myles
Friend
Paea
Mason
(new backrower)/Conn/Ciraldo/Kennedy
Anasta
Jones/Jaubs
Symonds
Waerea-Hargreaves/Cherrington
Nuuausala
...but if Ryles comes, Myles can shift to the backrow.

Well Ciraldo isn't coming either, so much for that.
I would like to see us sign Chris Houston, honestly. Not many kids going around that have 3 full years first grade experience at his age, already make 30 tackles a game consistently, 10-12 hitups a game, with the ability to offload and break the line.

For once Im suprised we're looking to sign players we actually need (Graham, Ryles, King). It feels good to have a good coach like Smith already.
This is feeling alot like the Bulldogs turn around this year with a new coach and players they required.Last edited by Geohood; 09-11-2009, 12:44 PM.

This is the best option in terms of FA signing that i have heard all season(aside from Carney).
I would've seriously considered kicking the bucket if we signed some of the players we have been linked with (Lote).
Ryles is a big, strong unit who plays with plenty of aggression and doesn't run out of steam after 2 hit-ups like our rabble does.
My most pleasing aspect is that he is a winner. He is the type of player who will dig in and keep trying to win until full-time blows. An attribute that i can give to maybe 10% of our squad. People were always quick to put him down, yet in my eyes he carried that dragons pack for many years and shouldered a lot of the blame for others doings.
I'm a big fan.
