Fantastic news. We're making the right signings for once.
Carney, Graham, Ryles + promising young guns... should certainly be an improvement on this year, especially with new coach Smith (though an improvement on utter shit shouldn't be that hard).
Best signing of the off season for mine. I just hope that he doesn't treat us as a retirement lounge, although with Smith i don't think that will happen.
Imagine that, some room and time for our backs and halves to actually show what they've got.... who knows they might start to develop into fine players
I think the club has the right idea, in every year employing a mentor prop for our pack, just until we have more experience.
2006 was the awful year where we really lacked any experience in the pack, and purchases like Glenn Hall, Mark Edmondson, Charlie Tonga, Lafi Manua, etc did nothing for our pack.
2007's introduction of Nutley gave as a hard-edged side to our pack, and his experience was especially valuable in our late run in the year.
2008, O'Meley led our pack around with plenty of gusto. He was meant to do the same in 2009, but injuries and poor form unfortunately stunted that - a fully fit and firing O'Meley would have seen us finish near the 8 definitely.
2009, Ryles will be the man to lead our younger pack around, but there will be more pressure on him now that Fitzgibbon is gone. Which is why I was suggesting that we sign an experienced workhorse backrower like Steve Simpson, just to temporarily fill the empty void Fitzgibbon has left, until one of the younger kids are ready. This is because most of the premier workhorse forwards like Laffranchi, Stewart, Houston, Mannering, Parker and Heighington are wrapped up long-term, whilst Ryan and Hindmarsh are not in danger of losing their spots like Simpson is.
The way I see it, Ryles and Simpson could stick around until the end of 2011, both on 2 year deals, and by 2012, both Waerea-Hargreaves and Cordner will be ready for full-time front row spots.
We don't need another backrower, with Ryles we can move Myles into the backrow and let Mase run wider with Myles tucking in a little tighter if needed. If anything I hope we sign another front rower... Jason Cayless would be nice
I'd love to see your backrow for the NYC, Jets & NRL side though Mack if we decided to sign another backrower... I'm sure once you do the sums you'll realise it's overkill (keeping in mind Maubs most likely wont be in the centres next season).
