I spoke to Peter O'Sullivan about him and the conversation went as follows:

Why are you so excited about Ryles? I think he is overrated.

Not overrated. Underachieved. He never had the proper coaching and he has always wanted to play under Brian.

But he is big and slow. That is not what we need.

He is actually very fast and the best forward athelete I have seen. He is big, strong and can play 80 minutes. If you lined up all the forwards in a fitness test for the whole comp he would win.

So O'Sullivan rates him.

Agreed. He may well have matured as a player and let's face it, he is still a stand out amongst Paea, FPN and co.

Stats mean a lot in Rugby League, that's a weak defence for something obviously couldn't argue against.

Ryles couldnt lead at teh Dragons. Actually he was teh one being easily led. i cannot support this signing by teh club if in fact they make it. its another monumental mistake. But you go on and "trust them". They are after all teh ones that deliovered the spoon to us with their stupidity. How can a bunch of powerful businessmen, with more money and experience than anything, keep making monumentally huge mistakes? Seriously....you know why? Desperation. You see, our little junior clubs dont mean anything. We dont build or create or breed talent, we think we can buy it. just like weve bought our way every other way.

All I said was that in response to your assertion that 130m in the superleague is like 130m for windsor, i thought id point out that the bloke did it year in year out in the NRL thats all. I didnt actually say whether or not I think he is a good signing. I can see what you are getting at and agree that stats are not the be all and end all but for a forward and in particular a prop, its a one dimensional role. you are valued as to your go forward (metres made), tackles made, tackles missed, busts, offloads, errors etc - all of which can be provided statistically so i think in the case of forwards in particular, stats can give quite a conclusive insight into the quality of the basis of their game.

In terms of what I think about the Ryles signing, Im not quite sure yet tbh. I can see the merit in it no doubt but his age and injury problems of the past are a worry. I feel that under smith however he will prosper like most of our players - we havent actually had a good developmental coach since maybe murray or gus so I think smith himself and his disciplined attitude and ability to nurture talent is key. I think there is some real merit in this signing but can see why it may not work out as well hence my ambivalence. At the end of the day, we need an experienced prop and he is the best option about

on 2, i did address that and say explicitly that ryles has been making those sorts of metres at nrl level consistantly for years. Its not like he was crap here then went there and all of a sudden started making good metres.

haha ok fair enough. I wasnt really looking for an argument, my next post was just going to be the link to a stats website that details my point of view for mr. melon. If he chooses to take it on board or not is his choice not mine but i am simply ensuring that we get our facts straight on here.

Also people are happy to bag Mason and call for him to be purged (not saying I disagree) but Ryles while not quite as bad is a bad distabling influence as well, but no one cares.

Bennet isn't a fan of paying props big money. Same reason poore is being shipped off.

I always found Ryles to be the core of the Dragons pack. He did his job and effectively. When you play as hard as he does you always get pinged for penalties. At this point i'll gladly accept some penalties in return for some passion.

Oh and it isn't Ryles' job to win games. He is there to put them in a position to do so, then it's up to the halves. I think he was a massive scapegoat for blind Dragons supporters who didn't see their weakness was in the halves. FFS they had Big chin playing there for almost half the season!

All we need Ryles to do, is to do what O'Meley did for us in 2008.

Make 120+ metres regularly, do a lot of the dirty work so some of our more talented forwards can focus on their own strenths, and try and keep the handling errors and penalties to a minimum.

If Ryles comes, then he IS our most talented forward.

Props win you games they just don't get any credit for it... I remember a game against the Knights late in the season of 08 where he single handily won the game for them yet got no credit for it at all. Your post proves my point...

He's no more prone to giving away penalties than Mick Crocker was and he was a massive part of our squad. Sure it's not good but every player has their weak point.

As for being destabilising? Maybe I'm missing something, what has he done?

Bennett was also happy to see Poore, Hannant & Civo go.. has nothing to do with talent. more the salary he likes to pay his props.
