About 80%. From a Saints fan thats involved in some capacity at Smerge. I dont know past form, but he's pretty certain.

I heard that it will be a two year contract, but I could be mistaken, my source is usually spot on about signings, but not contract lengths.

This year, Ryles' stats are:

20 games, 2 tries, 1 linebreak, 24 offloads, 14 tackle breaks, average 16 runs for 133 metres, average 26 tackles for 1 missed

Not bad at all. Plenty of yardage, plus his form when he left the NRL wasn't really bad at all either, besides the dumb penalties. One thing he has always done in his career is make the hard yards, much like O'Meley did, although O'Meley was more of an explosive player.

2001 - 27 games, average 16 runs for 135 metres
2002 - 20 games, average 19 runs for 149 metres
2003 - 9 games, average 20 runs for 150 metres
2004 - 14 games, avearge 16 runs for 132 metres
2005 - 21 games, average 16 runs for 136 metres
2006 - 18 games, average 15 runs for 128 metres
2007 - 17 games, average 15 runs for 128 metres
2008 - 23 games, average 16 runs for 138 metres
2009 - 20 games, average 16 runs for 133 metres

That is remarkable consistency in the go-forward department. A few seasons, in particular 2003/2004. The only issue with Ryles, much like O'Meley, is his on-field discipline, age and fitness. O'Meley did well in his first season for us but his body didn't have enough to back it up for another season. If Ryles can muster around 125-140 metres a game from a good 15-17 runs, dig in for a good share of tackles, and help out Myles, JWH and co. , that would be all that we need.

Remember this everyone - if we had kept Cusack OR Cayless, then we wouldn't be in this predicament. 2006 was the problem year, we left ourselves with NO experienced props. Nutley and O'Meley filled the roles of experienced pack-leaders as stop gap options very well, hopefully Ryles can do the same until Myles or Paea are ready the lead the pack on their own.

Billy can I make it clear, Ryles is replacing O'Meley not Fitzy.. One is a backrower, one is a front rower. Their roles are completely different for the team... It is just as useful a comparison as saying we signed Phil Graham to replace Fitzy.

let weigh this up:
- we need an experienced prop who can lead from the front - tick (he is also a former rep player so has played on the big stage)
- we need a bloke that makes plenty of hit-ups and is quite big, strong and destructive - tick

He ticks the boxes and I think his attitude problems should no longer be a worry as smith is one to always get the best out of players. Dont forget how good he was for st george last year and id imagine we are getting him for good value considering the money he has been on and was on. Here are his stats averaged out from last year:

thats pretty bloody good if you ask me. He is a very big boy so hopefully we can get him into shape for next year and use him as a wrecking ball in the early exchanges before introducing the likes of JWH, paea and Nuuasala to provide similar sting from the bench

My only reservation is his history of injuries. I seem to recall when he and Bailey were the bookends @ St Merge they rarely partnered each other because as one would come back from an injury the other would sustain another one.

On the topic of signing players from ESL, in particular Australians and Kiwi's who have moved there, we should be careful about the time they have spent there. For example, players such as Chris Nero (6 seasons), Ali Lauititi (6 seasons), Vinnie Anderson (5 seasons), David Solomona (5 seasons), Pat Richards (4 seasons), Scott Donald (4 seasons), Francis Meli (4 seasons) and Iafeta Paleaaesina (4 seasons) might have been standout players in their times in the ESL, but the amount of time they have actually spent in the ESL could just as easily have diluted their ability, getting used to the different brand of rugby league that the ESL produces. It would remain in question whether they could simply come back and withstand the rigors of NRL standard.

There are a few players still in ESL that would have tremendous value at looking into, that are still too young to be considered 'retiring veterans' in the ESL. Players who have spent the last 1-3 years in the ESL include such individuals as:

I don't think he missed that much time through injuries.. He did have a couple seasons there but mostly he didn't miss many games... 3 years though is a bit long for a guy over 30..
