Former NRL and State of Origin coach Graham Murray's life support switched off by: Peter Badel

FORMER NSW and Cowboys coach Graham Murray had his life support switched off at Brisbane's Princess Alexandra Hospital Sunday night.
Contrary to news reports Murray has passed away, the former Cowboys and Roosters coach remains alive this evening, although doctors have pronounced him brain-dead.

Family members made the decision to switch off Murray's life support Sunday after being summoned by hospital staff to visit the former NSW State of Origin coach.

A close associate of the family told News Limited Sunday night: "Muz's family were called in today to switch off his life support. He's been pronounced brain-dead and remains alive, although how long he hangs in I'm not sure."

Murray, 58, had been in poor health for some time and was hospitalised at the Princess Alexandra after a suspected heart attack earlier this month.

It was the coach's second scare after he suffered a heart attack in March and spent a week in a coma.

Murray was due to coach the Wynnum-Manly Seagulls in the Intrust Super Cup this year but stood down due to ill-health.

Murray holds a special place in Queensland rugby league's tapestry, becoming the first coach to steer the Cowboys to an NRL grand final in 2005, only to lose to Wests Tigers in the decider.

The former halfback had previously been to a grand final, with the Roosters qualifying for the 2000 decider in his first season in charge at the Bondi club.

The Roosters suffered a 14-6 loss to the Broncos and Murray had one more season at the club before taking over at the Cowboys, where he had seven successful seasons.

In a long and distinguished coaching career, Murray also coached the Leeds Rhinos in England, the Hunter Mariners in Australia's Super League and the Illawarra Steelers in the NSW Rugby League.

He also played at the top level for both Parramatta and South Sydney

Forget all this talk about the way he built this great club towards the glory days of the 2000's. This great man was one of the best blokes I have ever come across. A man of his word. RIP Muzza.

The few times I've met the man, he was always open to talk about the Roosters and all things football. He was one of those guys who make you love football, like he loved football.

He is still alive and breathing unassisted but apparently doctors have declared him 'brain dead'. Very sad.

Very sad, a top coach and a top bloke. It still irks me that Stuart is credited for our '02 win and is hailed as a super coach, whereas the credit should be with Muz for his nurturing of that that squad.

My deepest sympathies to his family.

                            Such sad news.

                            He's gone way too young.

                            Vale Graham.
