  • Mini and a positional change

At the begiining of the year I was one of many rooster supporters calling for RTS to be switched to fullback and Mini to the wing. Well I have to say I have changed my tune throughout the year. I think Mini has been excellent at the back to the extent that I want him re-signed and retained at fullback next year. His leadership of the team, positional play, inspiring tough runs when needed and calmness under pressure have been near faultless. I know he is not the flashiest fullback in the comp but given the other attacking talent we have in the team, that is not a concern for me anymore. Most of all he is a rooster through and through and there is nothing I would love more then to see Mini hold the premiership trophy aloft, either this year or next.

Having said that, I still think there is a positional change we need to make. We need SKD and RTS to swap positions. RTS is being starved of quality ball on the wing, quite simply because SKD can't pass. He is too big a talent, to only be taking hit-ups out of dummy half. I say, put SKD back in his original position and use his height under the high ball and let RTS carve up running off SBW, Pearce and Co. One part of RTS's game we haven't seen yet in first grade is his passing game. I watched him closely in the under 20's and believe me he has a passing game to match his running game. Get him into the centres now.

When coach Robbo decided that we were to have four vice-captains, I didn't like the idea. I thought it was a cop out. How wrong i was. How good have all our vice-captains played this year? Friend, JWH, Cordner and Pearce have all been outstanding. All have been inspirational. I would deadset be happy if any of the four of them was our next capatin once the great Mini retires.

We are competition favorites now, but to my way of thinking, we will be a better team next year, if that's even possible. With some of the young guys we have coming through such as Evans, Langi, Napa and Meehan and the further development of our current squad I think we are in for a very good next 5 years or so, even if SBW decides to switch back to Rugby after next season.

Marvellous idea. We have just reached the lead in the competition with 5 rounds to play So lets start tinkering with the team and making positional changes to mark the occasion

You articulated Minis underrated contribution to our team this year extremely well PB.

I don't think we would be where we are at the moment without his leadership and smarts at the back.

Your other calls are food for thought too I guess.

As much as I'd like to see Shek shadowing Sonny Bill in attack, I feel a little nervous about SKD defusing bombs on the wing.

If SKD can play like he did on Friday night, making good ground up the centre, taking the pressure of the forwards and causing havoc out wide, I'd say leave him there.

Skids is just starting to turn his season around. His last game was one of his best all year. Rts is also playing well on the wing - linking well with mini at the back and safe under the high ball.

Half the game is defence. Move Rts to an unfamiliar position and he will be targetted by other teams. Centre requires different decision making and a higher defensive workload.

I wouldn't be moving anyone at the moment unless injuries hit.

As much as I would like to see RTS and SKD swap positions, it would indeed be too late in the season to be trying to mess with the teams composition like that

I agree with your points regarding Minichiello. He has benefited greatly with a simplified role of defusing bombs and making meters out our own end and he still one of the best defusers of the bomb.

With Roger, occasionally interchanging with SKD in attack would be great to use that step but as what has been written previously changing a winning formula now may undermine the rhythm of that sides structure.

Credit due to SKD he has played remarkably well the last few weeks in defence and has contributed well out our own end using his frame a lot better.

I suspect our coach knows exactly what he's doing.

Having the combos of Sheck and Skd and Jennings and Toups means you split the danger. Both Skd and Toups have errors in them and Sheck and MJ are able to bring out their best.

As much as I'd like to see what would happen if MJ and Sheck teamed up...something like 50 tries between them, this way is better.

SKD is too weak defensively under the high ball. He struggles to catch a standard pass.

                    Good post.

                    Completely agree about Mini.

In theory I agree with switching RTS and SKD too. But I have real doubts as to their ability to learn new defensive responsibilities.

Which one is it Do you think it should happen or not Because this post of yours really having a bet each way on it. Agreeing to it in theory but not being sure if it would work ? Why would anyone in their right mind agree to something if they have real doubts about it working in some way shape or form ?

The only thing broken is Mini's knee.... RTS to fullback for a couple weeks then back to normal.

It's a good idea, but not this late in the season.
