Another interesting read on how we are the most penalised team

    http://www.news.com.au/sport/nrl/sin...-1226707728248

FORGET Blake Ferguson and Sandor Earl, when it comes to rugby league's great sinner the Sydney Roosters are Public Enemy No.1.

In a worrying revelation on the eve of the NRL playoffs, the boys from Bondi Junction are the most heavily penalised of all 16 teams, having been pinged a whopping 55 times in the past five weeks.

Worse, numbers supplied by Fox Sports Statistics reveal that, in the past five years, the current competition leaders have been the most penalised team three times and second most penalised twice.

Speaking with The Daily Telegraph yesterday, Roosters playmaker James Maloney confirmed coach Trent Robinson had spoken to his side about the worrying trend.

"It's something we're working on," Maloney said.

"We've been through the tapes to discuss the penalties we can live with compared to those can't and the ways to lower them.

"Of course, the other thing is that when you do give up a penalty, you have to be able to defend it. That way it's not an issue. But obviously the less penalties we give the less tackles we have to make."

Despite conceding an average of 8.6 penalties per game, the Roosters have gone well above that in the past five weeks against Newcastle (14), Penrith (9), Canberra (11), Wests Tigers (11) and Cronulla (10).

Incredibly, the Tricolours have also been among the top two most penalised teams since 2009, despite being led by three extremely different coaches in Robinson, Brian Smith and Brad Fittler while also experiencing a vast turnover of players.

"It's quite an anomaly," Fox Sports statistician Ian Collis conceded.

"While St George were penalised quite heavily for a period in the 50s, I'm not sure we've even seen one club go on a run like this before."

Privately, some within Roosters HQ fear the current crop may be paying the price for those indiscretions of previous, less disciplined, teams.

The fear is that when referees believe a club is guilty of certain indiscretions, it sticks.

And good luck getting the 50/50 calls when lumped with that tag.

Regardless, when it comes to the Roosters Seven Deadly Sinners, Maloney sits first with 21 penalties against his name.

Halfback Mitchell Pearce and Kiwi enforcer Jared Waerea-Hargreaves both have 17, followed by gritty hooker Jake Friend 14.

After that comes Sonny Bill Williams (13), Shaun Kenny-Dowall (13) and Marty Kennedy (12).

Already this year, the Roosters have conceded 189 penalties. Further back, and split by only two penalties, are Manly (167), Wests Tigers (166) and the struggling Parramatta Eels (165).

There is then another gap to Canterbury, on 156 penalties, followed by Gold Coast (148) and Brisbane (141).

For me, these are the two key points:-

Do you think this is the beginning of our PR trying to get the message out there?

Even this article missed the point re the penalties we fail to receive.

This is the most relevant part of that article.

Robbo needs to obviously have a chat with those players and tell them that to continue to be so badly disciplined will continue to cost us, maybe even cost us a premiership.

Try reading the article again and just see if you can grasp this comment this time around.

Its a good start getting this out in the public domain and discussed to put some pressure on the refs, Robbo really needs to step it up and cop a 10k fine it needs to become a massive issue.

Once again, an article in the media, though somewhat helpful, misses the point.

Again I watched Souths and the refs last night. Apart from the 8-3 count in their favour, there were many very helpful calls to get them over the line. They really needed it.

Bottom line, Souths have a big pack of forwards, Reynolds is excellent with his kicking and Luke is very good around the ruck. On top of their ability, they are a dirty, niggling, wrestling side, who constantly push the envelope in the ruck, both holding down for ages in defence, and walking off the mark in attack (which is usually rewarded with penalties). Unlike us, not only do they get away with it, they get many mysterious calls going their way.

Get on them. The rape of Easts by the men in pink will only intensify in the finals.

Yeah like the try that was ruled no try to the tigs yet was over ruled by the vidiot? Or was it the ridiculous 10 in the bin for Burgess that is the only thing that put the tigs in the game? Gee those rabbits got a helping hand.

Souffs get away with murder at the ruck every tackle they have a second effort and hold down the player. Not to mention every time Inglis is tackled he just walks off the mark and gets a penalty.

That cheating dog Perenara might as well be refereeing in a Souffs jersey.

With us the worst thing we could do is go into our shell, stop wrestling and holding down sides. That would hurt us more than the penalties. My thoughts are the refs won't blow a thousand penalties in the big games, we must stick to our guns.

Inglis is now worse than Slater for getting away with the crap he does. It seems if anything happens to him it must have been the oppositions fault. The way he walks off the mark really gives me the shits.

Absolutely .. been saying that for ages.
The moment he starts to wriggle around in a tackle, he draws a penalty. If he's in the tackle it wont be a strip but a lost ball.
It's like the ref's think, wow he's GI there's no way he can do anything wrong, it must be the other guys fault !

I'll add to this Hawk. If GI makes a mistake/error - automatic penatly to Souffs or scrum. He is a protected species like others we have named. This is not isolated to Souffs. Slater, Smith and Hodges come to mind.

Maybe even you could admit the nine team are just a tad biased when it comes to all things Burgess and Souths? Yes they went off a treat about the binning, but tigs were on the attack, Burgess stripped a tackled player, he is a known cheat and indecent assaulter and it was a no brainer for him to go. Thoroughly deserved it. The tigs try was also a no brainer for the vidiot - no option but to award it. There was another tigs try where Inglis knocked the bomb on into the tigs player's shoulder (wasn't playing at this contact) - subsequent try disallowed. Should have been a try.

Even you admit Inglis is a cheat who gets away with crap consistently. You and kegs1 crack me up with your mixed messages.
