Reports Sydney Roosters are looking to cut Willie Mason
By Peter Kogoy and Stuart Honeysett
October 07, 2009 .Willie Mason's playing days at the Sydney Roosters appear over as the club is looking to cut the Test and State of Origin star within days.

Mason has been offered $100,000 to "go away".

One of the highest-paid players at the club, Mason is contracted until the end of next season.

A Roosters insider told The Australian newspaper on Tuesday the club was desperate to get rid of Mason.

"The board of directors unanimously want him out of the club," the source said.

"Seeing him play rugby union in Japan isn't far enough away."

New coach Brian Smith, who joined the Roosters from Newcastle Knights two months ago, had what was described as a "stern chat" to Mason.

Another source said: "Brian Smith clearly wants him out of the place before pre-season training officially starts in less than two weeks.

"The bottom line is Smith wants a clean, fresh start and doesn't see Mason as part of his plans."

Rumours Mason was unwanted at Bondi Junction first surfaced within days of former coach Brad Fittler's axing and the announcement of Smith's appointment on a multi-year, multi-million deal.

Club chairman Nick Politis flew to Europe on business on Tuesday and was not available to return phone calls. If Mason is eased out as expected, it will leave the club with enough money under the salary cap to entice former Test frontrower Jason Ryles back from French Super League club Catalans Dragons.

Ryles had previously played in the NRL with St George Illawarra.

The Roosters are also ready to cut ties with troubled New Zealand international Setaimata Sa who was last month charged with assaulting a female police officer, resisting arrest, failing to leave licensed premises and damaging property following an allegedly alcohol-fuelled incident at a Sydney hotel.

It also heightens speculation the club will also have enough money to tempt sacked Wallaby winger Lote Tuqiri back to the game. Tuqiri's management embarked on a public relations campaign with the former Test rugby player after a possible move to French rugby club Bayonne went nowhere.

Tuqiri has been searching for a new home since the Australian Rugby Union terminated his contract for breach of contract.

The Fijian-born winger, who played as an amateur with West Harbour in the Sydney club competition, eventually settled out of court with the ARU.

As late as last Saturday Tuqiri said he was still considering "one or two options".

The Roosters are understood to have offered Tuqiri's management a back-ended contract that would see him earn about $120,000 in 2010, with a significant increase in the following seasons.

"What he is worth and what he can earn are two different things," Roosters recruitment manager Peter O'Sullivan said, when he confirmed the club's interest in the vastly experienced dual international.

"He's been an amazing player over the years so I'm sure any club would be interested in him."

The Mason news is yet another in a string of negative stories linked to the club.

The Roosters have been caught up in allegations their final game of the season, against North Queensland at the Sydney Football Stadium on September 6, was compromised by a betting plunge.

The rumours prompted club chairman Politis to contact the NRL over reports of a NSW Police probe over the alleged betting scam in his club's final home game of the regular season.

I reiterate again, the club have always said to mason that if he found another contract, he can go. So there is really nothing new in the article.

But thinking about this, would a concerted push to remove mason from the club be a ploy to avoid the investigation into the match fixing????

We obviously have a new sponsor in the wings. Sponsor says to Nick - "Get rid of Willie, and we'll sign".

I think there is a lot more to it than that but it could be one of the reasons

Interesting the mole in RLW hints at a high profile player been told to move on in regards to a 'sting'. I believe he is gone and have heard it through numerous sources both through the club and other outlets. I was told the club were willing to pay the difference on the contract he may get elsewhere just to see him gone.

            Please go Willie.

I expect to see Cherrington or Masoe play a big role in stepping into the position vacated by Mason.

I would like to see Cherro play a full-season starting in the backrow, see what he is capable of. He might be a bit of a tool at times, but he is big, strong, mobile, and he RARELY goes down in tackles - he always looks for an offload. That is a great asset to have.

Masoe is rated VERY highly, but he has had injury problems. He can really be something I reckon. BUT I would personally give Cherro first shot.

trust us coggy, this bloke is a freak. Big, strong, aggressive, powerful and skillful and can play up front or on the edges. Is pretty much willie mason jnr except probably more skillful. He will be big. This is the thing, we have so much outstanding quality coming through.

Not sure Id be starting cherro/masoe next year Mack. Id like to see Masoe, Symonds and Cherro battling it out for a bench spot with FPN and JWH battling it out for the other bench spot and with paea as the main stay on the bench along with ben jones.

Footy has mentioned the possibility of Kennedy to start up front next year and I must say that I dont mind that idea. Has a great workrate, is tough and gets stuck in. His form hasnt lived up to expectation in the lower grades so far but in particular against canberra eariler this year when he was trying to earn a first grade jumper he was absolutley brilliant. He was the best prop of of his age the year we signed him out of the schoolboys size and he has the build. With Ryles as mentor and Myles operating in the backrow, could be a more well-balanced and wise move imo

Trust us? trust us? This club has just won the spoon. Us hasnt got a ****en clue, Us hasnt had a clue for 4 years!!! Trust?

You go on and have 2 forwards (JWH and FPN) fighting for a bench spot, when JWH should be starting and ripping the opposition's heads off ala Morley in the first 20, and you have a certain spot wasted on the bench with Ben Jones!!!! Jonesy is a half. He aint a forward. Why do we waste the bench with little blokes, only use half our interchanges and insist on playing big heavy coconuts that wont last the 80? Is it any wonder we are last by a long way??

I hope Brian Smith turns yours and my world upside down. After the ridiculous decisions over the past 4 years by Politis, Bouris and the others, we need a complete and utter ball slashing overhaul.

wtf. Do you know who masoe is, have you watched him play?? He has not played first grade yet so I cant see how he has anything to do with first grades performances and he only played 4 games throughout the entire season because of injury which is also why he didnt get a game in firsts.

JWH to start?? You are talking about a 20 year old. We need experience up front early on. Also in terms of balance of the pack, JWH and Ryles starting together would be suicide - both very similar styles and builds except hargreaves is probably more aggressive. You need a worker who is a little more nimble to partner someone as big and powerful as Ryles. Myles would probably do the trick but is better used in the backrow imo.

Jones a wasted spot on the bench? The bloke is an out and out utility - can play halves, is competent enough in the centres and I reckon has the defensive competencies and spark to be a really good impact player around the ruck to give friend a break. How the hell is that a waste of a spot? What if friend or pearce or carney or one of the outside backs gets injured? We stick Ryles on the wing?

You just watch when miller, leilua, blair, cordner, te kiri, masoe, moeakiola, Williamson hit first grade. Just watch.
