  • Dylan Napa instant hit among fans

IF Paul Gallen and James Graham are still wondering how they were floored by a rookie who was fixing beer kegs not so long ago, we've finally got an answer.

“I just hate getting bumped off, so you’ve just got to go in as hard as you can,” said Dylan Napa, the NRL’s newest giant killer.

“It’s something that I’ve always prided myself on; strong defence.”

Have you seen Napa hit? Check out the video above...

The 20-year-old Roosters forward has left the biggest impression of any tyro to debut this season.

In his first interview since abusing the NRL with a mammoth shot on Bulldogs tough guy Graham, Napa credited his father Stan for a throwback style that’s fast earning him cult status.

Napa backed up his debut bellringer with an even sweeter hit on Gallen, sparking a social media war between the NSW Origin skipper and former Roosters coach Brian Smith.

“The fans obviously liked it,” Napa recalled.

“It’s just always been part of my game, but at the same time it’s not something I really fall back on.

“People did ask, ‘How was that?’ but if the other team gets a repeat set and scores, it doesn’t really mean anything.”

Scouted from New Zealand in 1980, Stan Napa played with Norths Devils in Brisbane and was sent-off three times in his first QRL season.

“My old man was a pretty good footballer - or so he said,” Napa laughed.

“He always said he was tougher than me, so that gives me something to aim for.

“I was pretty gutted when they banned the shoulder charge.”

Napa moved from Brisbane in 2010 and quickly settled into the Bondi lifestyle as he alternated between training and cellar room shifts at the Beach Road Hotel.

“I was just fixing kegs and that,” he said.

“It was good, I met a lot of people ... some Swedish ... But I didn’t get any numbers.”

The redhead would probably have more luck nowadays, after earning the nickname ‘The Bell-ranga’ among impressed Roosters fans.

Second tier salary cap restrictions prevented him from debut until the Roosters released Lama Tasi in round 15, and even then Napa wasn’t confident about breaking into one of the strongest packs in the club’s history.

“This is a hard team to crack,” he said. “In the preseason I wasn’t even thinking about playing NRL, just doing my thing at (NSW Cup feeder side) Newtown.

“But once I got that opportunity against Canterbury I had to take it because I might not have gotten another one.”

His defence has been awesome, it'll interesting to see what position he ends up playing in first grade.

I do like the "bell ranga" as well. I came up with Napalm and Bell Ranga is better IMHO

We need to put things a bit more into perspective. Napa's big hits, try saving tackle on $am burge$$ and the offload that lead to a try have been very 'highly' impressive! However, from the game against $ouff$ he was equal first for most missed tackles with 5 missed (1 leading to a try), along with having the highest amount of ineffective tackles with 2, so a bit more work is required with his defense.

The main thing I picked up on with Napa from that game was he played the full 80min which again is highly impressive from a forward at his age, but the problem for me was he only made 50m from just 8 hit ups. I would love to see him looking for a bit more work with doing hit ups and run harder with more aggression to make more meters with each hit up.

I do realize the bloke is only young, he certainly will improve with age and experience and no doubt has a bright future ahead of him. Just wanted to put the things above out there for some perspective so we can hopefully see even more improvement from him during the finals series when/if he gets his opportunities.
The year 2013 marks the beginning of the Roosters next 'decade of excellence', and it will prove to be more successful than the last!

                      Here's looking at you, kid.

Well if he can intimidate their forwards when they carry the ball, then he is doing his job. Stats are good but sometimes when he puts those hits on the 'Gallen' types, he does a lot for the morale of the others.

Your right ROC181, he would be putting some fear into the opposition with his big hitting ability. Maybe I am being a little harsh on him for his age and experience, its just that I always want constant improvement in our side as I always want whats best for the team.

As it stands, when JWH returns next game imo Napa will be the one making way for him. Of course Napa will want to play every game in the finals, but for him to do so he will need to have a big game against manly by making more hit ups and making more meters. Good luck to him, I would love to see him have a blinder and force Robbo to keep on selecting him!

I hope I'm wrong but I don't think we'll see Napa vs Manly.

I think we'll line up with:

                            13. FPN
                            12. Aubs
                            11. SBW
                            8. LOD
                            9. Friend
                            10. Moa

                            14. Kennedy
                            15. Liu
                            16. Guerra
                            17. Morts

I rate Dylan Napa as a player. I think he will grow to be a destructive force in the forward pack along with the likes of Kane Evans and Isaac Liu.
In regards to Tommy Smith's comment, I would choose Napa over Guerra. Both played a wide running back row role last week against Souths, but I believe Napa has more to offer in both attack and defence then what Guerra does.
