  • Sydney Roosters great Kevin Hastings reveals heavy cost of head knock trauma

    http://www.news.com.au/sport/nrl/syd...-1226717322729

SYDNEY Roosters great Kevin Hastings has revealed he came close to taking his own life after spiralling into depression due to the number of head knocks he received during his distinguished career.

Hastings, who played more than 200 games for the Roosters between 1976 and 1987 and was voted the Dally M halfback of the year on three occasions, made the startling revelation in Rugby League Week magazine.

The publication has undertaken an investigation into the effects of concussion on players and discovered there are a number of former first-graders suffering from problems linked to head knocks.

Hastings, whose talented son Jackson signed for the Roosters last month, has been suffering from depression since retiring.

"I was going to check out. I could see no other way out to my problems and my mind was made up,'' Hastings said. "Luckily someone close to me intervened.

"They got to me and stopped me...if not for that, I would be gone now. I am lucky.

"It's something I have kept very quiet not even my kids know but I think the time has come to speak up now.

"I am convinced (the head knocks) did the damage to me, brought on my depression.''

The report also reveals former Test winger Willie Carne's memory is shot due to blows to the head and Paul Langmack is in constant agony with head and neck aches.

Health issues they have reported include depression (in some cases leading to suicidal tendencies), memory loss, constant head and neck pain, and dementia.

RLW has also revealed South Sydney have been the subject of a video dossier circulated among medics from rival NRL clubs, which the doctors believe show the Rabbitohs have not followed the NRL concussion guidelines on some occasions this season.

I'd have thought just being left out of the '82 Kangaroo Tour squad would have been enough to make him consider checking out. 30 years later and it still bugs me....

Anyone remember that game at the Sports Ground when Horrie went smack into a goal post? He didn't move for about 5 minutes and an eerie silence fell over the crowd.

Good to see Horrie bounced back from this.

As for Souths, the cheating pricks. Hope it bites them on the arse.

Unlike the thick padding on today's goal posts, in those days Horrie crashed into some very flimsy goal post padding !

was against the sharks from memory. Later in the match he scored, and as he crossed the line he looked at the post, as if to say "Not gonna get me this time"

I think I may have posted this story previously. Forgive me if it bores you

I met Horrie the night he became a Life Member. He was stoked that I could recall that game. You could see his eyes light up that people still remembered him.

From memory, he was carried off on a stretcher and bounced back on the field 5 minutes later as he didn't want to use up a reserve. Part Hero/ part mad

He was my first Roosters man-crush. The Bill Brown of halfbacks.

Was always my favourite player as a kid. I remember listening to the radio to hear the rep teams announced and yeah, Horrie always got shafted. Mind you Mortimer and Sterling were both in their primes at the time. He is in my top 2 favourite Roosters of all time without a doubt.

I linkedin with him at the start of the year and he sent me an awesome message about the chooks.

I sent him a message when the jackson rumours were flying around but he never responded. Probably thinks im a journo now!

Interesting timing given the NFL have just paid out several zillion dollars to settle a concussion lawsuit by ex players.

how can a study of $ouff$ and concussion come to any conclusion when half the time there is no concussion , just uninjured players taking dives

                              Absolutely kb.

I'm glad our players cop it and play on.

                              Other teams would respect that.

The Storm will be baiting Souffs and I reckon they'll bite for sure.

At least we know Manly will just play it tough. I'm a fan of that.
