  • 20 year Penalty analysis

So here is an in depth look at Rooster penalties over the past 20 years .

Rather than only looking at individual games I’ve spent a lot of time pouring over the penalty counts to see how we Roosters really compare. So here is a summary of the data, real facts and my conclusions. Please add your own take on what I present.

I have focused on the penalty differential (difference between penalties for and against) as I believe that more accurately represents the potential for bias. Are we being penalised because we infringe AND also not receiving the penalties we deserve .

Our penalty differential ranking with respective coaches shown:

    Gould 1994-1999 : 8th,5th 1st(greatest positive),7th,7th,6th
    Murray 2000-2001: 13th,10th
    Stuart: 2002-2006: 9th,10th,3rd,10th,13th,9th
    Anderson/Fittler: 2007:9th
    Fittler: 2008-2009: 15th,16th
    Smith: 2010-2012: 16th,14th,14th.
    Robinson2013 :16th.

So, pretty much since Gould, we have only had one good penalty differential position, that being under Stuart in 2004 when we were the third best team, (infringed the least) but pretty much since Freddie was coach, we have had consistently the worst differential for the past 6 years and consistently bad since Gould in 2000. Well 2013 this years differential by the Roosters is the worst by ANY NRL club for the past 20 years, being –64 ,the previous worst being Sharks in 2002(-54).

For the past 20 years the average worst differential is -40.

However the Premiers over the past 20 years have only had really good differentials on 4 occasions, Manly in 1996,1997, 2nd best twice, Tigers in 2005 (2nd best) and Dragons in 2010 (best differential).

The average differential penalty position which the premiers have finished in over the past 20 years happens to be 8th , which tends to show having the best penalty differential doesn’t mean becoming premiers. Therefore having the worst differential may not stop us necessarily, but will certainly make our job that much harder.

I noted the following teams ,Dogs in 1995 -14/15th worst penalty diffntl, Newcastle in 1997 -11 /16th worst, Broncos 1998 -29/19th worst, Broncos 2000 -25/14th worst and Manly 2008 -33/14th were all Premiers.

By the way the only team to have the best penalty differential (+37) in a season and finish Minor premiers AND win a Grand final was St George in 2010!

So heres hoping we can beat the average !!

It all started in 2008, 2008 was the year QLD equaled the most orgins win in a row previously set by NSW, now our conspiracy and the NQ conspiracy are in the same boat, so by QLD going on this dominance we get penalised.

Great work gragra - it confirms what some of us here have been highlighting. As for PtB, is that the best you've got to say? I expected more from you given your position on this subject.

That doesn't make sense to me PtB. What would the media have to gain by highlighting the travesty that is the penalty treatment of the Roosters? Surely better for the media to keep bleating on about the Roosters being undisciplined and keeping quiet the lack of penalties received which gragra's figures reveal.

Another thing, you have idiots like that ABC "commentator" who floated the preposterous idea about the Roosters deliberately giving away penalties as some sort of tactical advantage which completely ignores where the Roosters finished on the table in 2009, 2011 and 2012. If gragra is media I'd be very surprised.

                  Yeah that's a good theory.

We defend for 3 or 4 tackles on our line then purposely give away a penalty so we can defend another set.

I'm sure they players don't mind tackling all day.

Love ya work gragra, Im a stats freak too, not that you can look in to them too much. My favourite this year has been most forced drop outs. You hear 'Pearce doesn't force any dropouts' and we 'don't get many repeat sets'. I think id rather have most tries scored by a team than repeat sets, but were the Roosters so the media will always look at the negative stats/records and not the positive.

I'll try to change the subject.
In 1975 were minor prems, had the best defence and the second best attack and Manly were the closest in those stats to us.
In 2013 its the same but we had the best attack, conspiracy theory, maybe?

What? That's called a coincidence not a conspiracy.
