So here is an in depth look at Rooster penalties over the past 20 years .
Rather than only looking at individual games I’ve spent a lot of time pouring over the penalty counts to see how we Roosters really compare. So here is a summary of the data, real facts and my conclusions. Please add your own take on what I present.
I have focused on the penalty differential (difference between penalties for and against) as I believe that more accurately represents the potential for bias. Are we being penalised because we infringe AND also not receiving the penalties we deserve .
Our penalty differential ranking with respective coaches shown:
Gould 1994-1999 : 8th,5th 1st(greatest positive),7th,7th,6th
Murray 2000-2001: 13th,10th
Stuart: 2002-2006: 9th,10th,3rd,10th,13th,9th
Anderson/Fittler: 2007:9th
Fittler: 2008-2009: 15th,16th
Smith: 2010-2012: 16th,14th,14th.
Robinson2013 :16th.
So, pretty much since Gould, we have only had one good penalty differential position, that being under Stuart in 2004 when we were the third best team, (infringed the least) but pretty much since Freddie was coach, we have had consistently the worst differential for the past 6 years and consistently bad since Gould in 2000. Well 2013 this years differential by the Roosters is the worst by ANY NRL club for the past 20 years, being –64 ,the previous worst being Sharks in 2002(-54).
For the past 20 years the average worst differential is -40.
However the Premiers over the past 20 years have only had really good differentials on 4 occasions, Manly in 1996,1997, 2nd best twice, Tigers in 2005 (2nd best) and Dragons in 2010 (best differential).
The average differential penalty position which the premiers have finished in over the past 20 years happens to be 8th , which tends to show having the best penalty differential doesn’t mean becoming premiers. Therefore having the worst differential may not stop us necessarily, but will certainly make our job that much harder.
I noted the following teams ,Dogs in 1995 -14/15th worst penalty diffntl, Newcastle in 1997 -11 /16th worst, Broncos 1998 -29/19th worst, Broncos 2000 -25/14th worst and Manly 2008 -33/14th were all Premiers.
By the way the only team to have the best penalty differential (+37) in a season and finish Minor premiers AND win a Grand final was St George in 2010!
So heres hoping we can beat the average !!
