IMO the year is important because it's a team sport. Also times change, so modern players are generally more skillful/athletic than older players. On these grounds SBW will always be the better player because he's playing the modern game.

Or is your question just 'which player do you reckon is better?'

Probably SBW. Joey says it himself of the Freddy/Joey... kicks of his that were 'lucky' really were. These days ordinary halves just nail them as there's more focus on technique, which has improved.

SBW is a more developed player (stronger, more skillful and knows more about the modern game... which is harder than the older game.)

Freddy was a genius. He had the most lethal combination of passing and running skills I've ever seen.

And being a key playmaker you'd take him over SBW.
