  • The truth on why souths finally lost

No mandated breaks to allow the battered Sea Eagles to suck in the lower-quality oxygen on the south side of the harbour. No time-outs where Geoff Toovey's stressed men could rally to defend for another set of six, or exhort a bruised forward to charge the ball up against Souths' leg twisters. A low penalty count actually helped Manly and punished Souths. In the first half, where the Rabbitohs led 14-0 and then 14-6 at the break, the penalties were 4-1 to Souths.
In the second half, it was 2-1 to Manly, leading to a final 30-20 score. Souths have been the referees' favourites all year, receiving the most penalties and conceding the fewest. They are not accustomed to continuous play like Manly and Melbourne, who can defend end-to-end for continuous sets.
The Rabbitohs' big forwards survive on piggy-back penalties, yet only one came their way in a second half where they scored their lone try on the bell. In a round-seven Manly-Souths game, won 20-12 by the Rabbitohs, there were 23 penalties, a massive count for a top-of-the-table clash.
Sports Data statistics show South Sydney's win/loss record was 5-6 when the penalty count was 15 or under, while Manly tend to lose when the penalty count exceeds 15. In the Rabbitohs' semi-final win over the Storm, the penalty count was nearly double the grand final qualifier tally - 15, including a run of 6-0 to the Rabbitohs.
As the grand final nears, the penalty count comes down, just as it does at State of Origin time, meaning it's good news for the Sea Eagles and possibly bad news for the Roosters who, some coaches claim, concede penalties in order to buy time to reorganise their defence.

    - I agree about souths.
    - That statement about the roosters is just crazy. The whole year they said penalties would cost us, and now when they are gone it is going to hurt us???

Funny comment about less penalties hurting us....... 5 - 4 penalty count last week and we win by 30+.......

Yep, giving away penalties on purpose only to put ourselves under more pressure and tire ourselves makes so much sense. Who comes up with this shite? I believe they said the same about the dogs last year.

To be honest, I do think we and other clubs, give away this kind of penalty. But only once every other week.

You can tell when the defending player is lying on the guy with the ball and is staring at the ref waiting for him to blow the penalty. I have seen most clubs do this, but it is rare.

However - When we are getting 10-15 penalties against us a game, a good proportion of which are piggy-backing the opposition, this does not help us.

Seriously, how can an nrl journalist seriously think that a club that is having on average 12 penalties blown against us a game have it reduced to 2-3 for the finals and be worse off!!!

I like the part where it says that Souths are the most favoured when it comes to penalties yet they whinge that their penalties are 'not the right ones'.

Very interesting stats indeed. It supports what we all know anyway. If you watch any souffs games this year it beggars belief how many good penalties they get. They seem to get penalties to get out of their own half more than any other team.

I don't think that predicting the GF winner based on the size of the penalty count has any real credibility. We have won many games this year being caned in the penalties and when we have won the penalties (i consider an even penalty count a win)

The penalty counts supporting souths was one reason I was nervous about playing souths in the final. You never knew how much support they would get...

I think this game will be won or lost by the players, which is a great thing!

I agree, I've seen Maloney do it a few times but to think we would do it so many times a game is pretty ridiculous

I am surprised that this patently ridiculous argument is still in circulation.

Sterlo mentioned this on his show. But showed stats that most of the stats we give away are ones that give the opposition a free 30-40m. Hardly an advantage.
