Manly confident of retaining Anthony Watmough and Glenn Stewart

    By Stuart Honeysett
    October 12, 2009

Manly are confident of retaining both Anthony Watmough and Glenn Stewart despite the prized backrowers being among a host of star players off contract next season.

The 2008 premiers are expected to announce new deals shortly for halfback Matt Orford and wingers Michael Robertson and David Williams.

The Sea Eagles will then turn their attention to next season with Watmough, Stewart, Jamie Lyon, Steve Matai, Josh Perry, Jason King and Kieran Foran all coming off contract.

Watmough, who will go into camp with the Kangaroos on Tuesday for the Four Nations tour, would be a priority after being named Dally M second-rower of the year.

That could leave Stewart available to rival clubs and there has been speculation Parramatta and Sydney Roosters are poised to pounce.

"They've both been so solid for us - particularly over the last three or four years, so we're very keen to keep them," Manly chairman Scott Penn said of his backrowers.

"It's going to be a challenge because we've got three or four internationals off contract at the end of next year."

Watmough's season got off to a shaky start after he was fined for allegedly assaulting a club sponsor but he finished the season as the best backrower in the game.

There was speculation Melbourne Storm were ready to make a play for him given Storm and New South Wales coach Craig Bellamy was impressed by his performances for the Blues.

However, the Storm moved to quash the rumours claiming they would not be able to afford him with so many star players already under their salary cap.

Penn said they were keen to sign Watmough, 26, to a new deal as long as four years, identifying him as a potential future captain of the Sea Eagles.

Orford is the captain of the club but is expected to sign a new contract that will expire in two years.

"He has certainly matured as both a player and a person and from the club's perspective that's a very positive sign," Penn said of Watmough.

"He's a Narrabeen junior, he's always been part of the Sea Eagles family and we'd like to think that would count for something.

"Obviously, there's a commercial reality as well but we'd like to think we can strike that balance."

Is there an off contract player that isn't linked with us? Seriously over the News LTD rags linking us to EVERY SINGLE DAMN PLAYER, ffs.

I hope not, not for the price he would be demanding anyway. Doubt Parra could afford him.... don't know how they're going to fit their team under the salary cap for next season tbh.

Hahaha that is completely ridiculous. The fact they mention Parramatta shows it's a complete beat up. There's no way Parra could afford him. Also, I'd hope the club's learnt it's lesson in terms of overstocking backrowers. We need a prop, or outside back, and that's it.

Parra and souffs look to be exempt from the cap.Let them fight over him.
Watmough has already made it clear he wants a big pay day on his next deal,I would suspect more players than mentioned from the chip stealers will be looking elsewhere...

I agree and for the record, think that what we would be paying stewart is overs and would be better spent in the frontrow and centres where it is needed or spent smarter.

I agree that manly are going to have a lot of players not really the likes of watmough etc that will be forced to leave which is where the opportunity lies but tbh, do you actually rate anyone in that team. I think apart from keiran foran, none of their outside backs are worth it. In the forwards I would agree apart from maybe stewart. Manly built a premiership off team cohesion NOT big name players etc so if we are looking for marque players in key positions (most notably centres) Manly players are not it

We have enough second row suited players as it is, we dont need to be spending our money on stewart he wouldn't come cheaply either. We need to sign PROPS! Ryles, Cayless etc.

The problem is the type of backrower, as Billy Gunn said.

How many of our backrowers can make 40+ tackles and 10+ hitups the way that Fitzgibbon, Harrison or Ricketson did?

We have Cherrington, Mason, Sa, Symonds, Masoe, Conn, Guerra, Takairangi, Waerea-Hargreaves.

All of these players, except Conn, are far better used as hitup men who shouldn't spend all their energy and null their effectiveness making that many tackles.

Stewart is an 80 minute lock-forward who will always give you 12+ hitups, 30+ tackles, as well as a good passing and offloading game.

Compared to the crap that we currently have I am all for the club buying quality. After the season we've just had I'd be happy for a completely new team! Pay peanuts you get monkeys.

So how much per season would you be willing to pay Glenn Stewart Coggy?

With any luck Willie Wanka and his over priced salary will be punted at the end of next season at the latest so the Roosters should have the money to spend on a quality workhorse prop or second rower.

Glenn Stewart will do me just fine - he does the hard yards, makes the tackles and has a fine offload as well.

He'd probably be worth $200 to $250,000. Whatever our current rubbish are on he'd be worth more.
