  • When Is A Rooster A Rooster?

So when is Rooster a Rooster. What does it take before you can call a certain player a real Eastern Suburbs/ Sydney Rooster man.
Ive often thought about this on many occasions.

Going back from the 80's you would pick teams and teams of them. Where playing for a club was a privilege and slaved your guts out with pride and malice.

So what about the 90's and beyond? The Luke Ricketson's of the new age money game.

It was brought about to me again through Roosterproud's post.

there is a video on the roosters site prior to the gf( brekky interview I think) and at no stage during the interview he said he was a rooster. the closest he came was saying he is an immortal. he is a riff and will always be a riff. the fans are what is keeping him connected to us.
watch the interview and draw your own conclusions. brad left us when he was sacked and is now only available when he is paid, either by us or if nein needs some special interview.
who did trent have as assistants back with the cataluna crew
I can go along with Brad being a Rooster. But was he just chasing a Premiership? i dont know? Ill still call him a Chook anyway. Theres not many others where he has roots and background.

Braith is a good example for me. He stuck his body on the line for us and the team many many a time and i think his heart was in the right place. I didnt like him a great deal when he came from the dogs, but he really laid it out for us, sometimes not all good but i commend him for that and in the end he grew on me comfortably.

Id just like to get your take on this.

Quite simply Braith was too into Braith to ever be a club man.
          Reminds me of noddy.
          Above the players.

          True club men.

Yeah I live Ricko. But post footy I have lost respect for him. Get a life.
          I love Luke Phillips.
          I love Fletch
          I love horry
          I love Brendan hall
          I love Dave trewhella
          I love beetson
          I love and hate Politis
I used to love Harry Phipps

But if I'm really honest with myself I don't love individuals that much. I love guys that share a common purpose to better themselves and the club.
I see Freddy as a hoax.
If u read his book he emphatically states that he is shy and that's why he didn't make an effort as a player.

Now as a retiree you see him rock up and socialize at functions etc if there is a quid to be made. He schmoozes.
He was a great player but he is a dick.

          I love Gould
          Just because he is bright.
I love a lot of wallsters.
          barbarian ......arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrgh!!!!!!!

I reckon Freddy is, just listening to him speak about how much he loves the place and stuff..... If he didn't truly then i doubt he would have played here for 10 years

And i dont think he was chasing a premiership.... he had already won one at penriff

but in the modern day you can't go past mini!!!

Only he would know if hes really a Riff or a rooster.Dave Brown was a rooster so was Ferris Ashton and you can add mini to that list as well.being a one club man has a lot to do with it imo not everything though as we have had some great players come from other clubs like Beetson for example who was a balmain boy.

Any player who wears our jersey with pride and passion. I certainly consider JWH a rooster, even though he previously played for manly.

In his early years, i often wondered who he was actually playing for? He definitely brings Origin temperament to Easts thats for sure.

                    Foghorn Leghorn comes to mind.

Paul Vautin embodied everything that the Roosters stood for in the early 90s.

But seriously, barring Mini as it's too easy, the two names that come to mind that embody the Roosters are:

Kevin Hastings - the greatest halfback the club has had, hands down. One club legend. Always in the shadow, undeservedly, of Peter Sterling. If Horrie had Mick Cronin, Brett Kenny, Eric Grothe and Ray Price around him to make him look good then he would have played for Australia for 30+ tests and 20+ State of Origins.

Hugh McGahan - the man bled for us, gave his all when most around him didn't give a damn. I wouldn't let him run my charity but I would let him run my football team.
                      SUPER DRAGON!

he's the red headed version of Anasta

Horrie was probably the most loved rooster of all time , up there with artie and now Mini

                          What about Ayliffe, & Fairfax?

Event though he played for Manly first, i thought Jack Elsegood was a fan favourite even after he retired.

Freddy loves the roosters. This may be a small thing but his "my opinion may be biased" after the penalty try, really stood out to me.

I didn't want to take them away from you.

I love Rusty for reasons other than his league career. The man used to have a line on the finest ganja this side of Roosterfarian. I don't think there was a time in the 70's and 80's where you couldn't get a contact high off him.

The unselfishly fatalistic suicide mission that was his Roosters coaching career is the main reason why that man must be made a Roosters life member if it hasn't happened already. He knew that he was taking on a rotting corpse of a club but willingly walked into the threshing machine that was the "who gives a damn" era of the Roosters. It's one of the reasons I love that man even now.
