Sydney Roosters coach Trent Robinson says Sonny Bill Williams' decision to remain with the NRL premiers is a huge tribute to everyone connected with the club.
A disappointed New Zealand Rugby Union (NZRU) broke the news on its Twitter feed on Friday that the 28-year-old had knocked back an offer to rejoin the Super Rugby champions Chiefs in 2014.
But he said the decision to give the back-rower space and time to make his decision had been vindicated.
"It's a big thing for our club on and off the field," Robinson told AAP.
"I wasn't sure until he told us last night. It was his decision and I've said all along I wasn't going to ask him. We'd let him come to his own decision.
"All we did was support him and now he has supported us. It's great for our game that he's still here."
NRL chief executive Dave Smith was involved in the negotiation process with Williams, but said it was the Roosters that got the deal over the line and expressed his delight at his decision to play again in 2014."Qui audet adipiscitur"

The way I see SBW is that he actually likes the limelight in a shy quiet way, he or his management are constantly needing media attention, leading into the GF there was plenty of media hype & speculation that SBW may not be fit then a few days after the GF plenty of media talk about him making himself available for the Kiwi's again back in the papers. IMO he will go away with the Kiwi League team & then announce a return to Union all the time getting probably daily media reports about it. Then there will be an announcement that he has a Boxing match coming up after the Super 15 has finished. Then it will be time to talk about SBW back in the All Blacks team then it wouldn't surprise me to start hearing that SBW is heading back to League in 2016. (I hope Nick has a hand shake deal with him on that).
He doesn't smoke or drink so I think the limelight is what he gets a high from. Good luck to him because he is a true champion.
Fantastic news. This year just keeps getting better. I don't know if I can eat anymore humble pie.
