I watched many games of under 20s where both Evans and Napa played long minutes together. They seem to feed off each other and spur each other on when they are both on the field together. Both seem to be getting bigger and bigger, Napa seemed to be the biggest guy on the field last night and that is saying something when you are talking about a Samoa v Cook Islands game. Loving Napas consistency in this world cup. No mistakes, real solid defence and long minutes. Just what coach Robbo would want to see.
Evans needs to work on his fitness. He really struggles after 15 minutes, and always has. Even in under 20's Napa used to play for much longer periods. Also, he still looks a bit clumsy in defence. Hopefully Robbo and Fitzy can sort him out because I have seen him do some amazing things on the football field and would love to see him become a regular first grader.
Sorry I wrote about it in another thread, didn't see this one. But yeah they're killing it! And sonny also almost bombed another try haha.
Did SBW's last try look familiar to the two lead runners the roosters used in attack this year? Prob a different shape, but lets hope all the kiwis don't take the plays and ideas of the roosters back to their own clubs. Shaun Johnson already said they (nz, not the warriors) are implementing a similar defence style in this tournament
Game was well and truly over at half time but PNG did well in the second half only going down 16-10.
Nene Mcdonald - 4/10
Poor effort on the first try of the game, showed little desire to prevent the try. Got switched to fullback in the second half but failed to inject himself. Still looks a likely type but not a good day for him.
7 runs, 37 metres, 5 tackles & 1 offload.
Roger Tuivasa-Sheck - 7/10
Scored two early tries showing good strength in the first and good footwork in the second. Got moved to fullback in the last 10 minutes where he made a linebreak, a solid game all up.
Scored a try as soon as he came on, literally with his first touch but outside of that struggled to get involved. Was really quiet and gave away a couple of stupid penalties.
Typical Sam Moa, just 100% in everything he does. Strong carries all game and a lot of big hits in defence. Got a few good offloads away too.
13 runs, 115 metres & 27 tackles
Sonny Bill Williams - 9/10
Broke the ladies hearts this week when he announced he's in a relationship but certainly had his mind on the job. The complete first half performance, offloading with ridiculous ease, breaking the line, setting up tries he was in absolutely everything. Had a 4th try stolen off him from another dud video ref decision. Rightfully got motm. Just check out his stats below!
Letting BJ go was always going to come back and bite us. I don't doubt that he didn't have big attitude problems but he'll undoubtedly be one of those players (just like Tamou) that we let go because of disciplinary reasons that go on to reach great heights. He'll play for NSW in the next two years. And he probably would've shaped as the perfect player to step up and fill the hole that SBW will leave. Sure he isn't anywhere the worker that SBW is, especially with how tight he keeps the defence, but when it comes to raw talent he doesn't have many peers in the game in my opinion. Smith ruined his time here by playing him on the wing. I pray we handle the Moga situation better. Develop his defensive game, work him into our attacking systems to give him time with the ball. We could have a ridiculous backline in 2 years time with RTS, Tupou, Jennings, Moga and MacDonald (who has all the attributes, just needs to work on his defence). Plus Taane Milne if he sticks around who is one of the best young defensive centres going around and has magic footwork and great delivery to his centre.
We're very lucky to have such immense talent coming through with RTS, Tupou, Moga, MacDonald, Jonathan Reuben, Milne, Naughton (who looks a prospect to me), Hastings, Willis Meehan, Evans, Napa, Liu, Taukeahio and Langi all with plenty of wraps from important people. Some of those guys are the most promising players in the country (in their positions) for their age. Mix that with so many players only now hitting their mid 20s that have played around 100 first grade games and it all but ensures that we will maintain a high level of success. Pearce for example will hit around 27 when Hastings comes into grade in the halves and if all goes to play we'll have one of the most promising halves in the comp learning from one of the most experienced (and dare I say he'll be close to the best by that stage in my opinion). Very exciting times ahead for us Rooster fans!!
Yes there is no doubt we have an immense pool of talent coming through, but considering how young our current side really is, it can't be expected that all of these blokes are going to hang around in NSW Cup forever. Of that list, as it currently stands I can only see RTS, Tupou, Moga, Hastings, Evans and Napa as long term Roosters, while the others have real question marks. Langi and Liu, and maybe Meehan (if he stays with league) I feel would be the most likely out of these possibilities.
Then again Naughton and Reuben are yet to pull on a Roosters jersey, and I've never seen too much of the others to comment, although it looks like MacDonald has a few wraps on this website.
I'm sure Trent will make the best decision for all involved.
