  • Sponsor dumps Roosters

By Phil Rothfield From: The Sunday Telegraph Sat Oct 17 21:21:57

THE Sydney Roosters' year from hell has got a whole lot worse with the revelation long-time sponsor Samsung has dumped the club because of disgraceful player behaviour.

The company that has poured in almost $4million over the past six years informed chief executive Steve Noyce last week they were "looking in a new direction''.

Six months of scandal, including allegations of assaults on women, high-range drink driving, the coach on a drinking bender and Nate Myles' infamous hotel defecation has battered the image of the Roosters in the eyes of their long-time corporate partner.

Throw in recent match-fixing allegations from the final premiership round, albeit strongly denied by players who are now contemplating legal action, and the once proud club has gone into one of its darkest periods in 101 years of premiership football.

Noyce confirmed last night the Roosters were on the lookout for a new major sponsor following Samsung's exit.

"I can confirm they won't be with us next year,'' Noyce said. "They've been great partners for six years, but globally they are looking in a different direction."

"Obviously they spoke about the player behaviour. On the field, it's been a disappointing year - off the field it's been extremely disappointing. We've just got to work harder and smarter.''

The Roosters have hired the NRL's strictest disciplinarian, veteran coach Brian Smith, to begin an immediate cleanout and repair a battered image.

The former Dragons, Parramatta and Knights mentor has a pathetic coaching record (he's never won a comp in 25 years), but he is determined to install respect and discipline at the club.

The first casualty is likely to be former Test forward Willie Mason, who is seen by many at the club as a bad influence on younger players.

When asked about Mason's future, Noyce replied: "He's under contract for next season.''

Pressed on whether Mason will be playing next year, Noyce said: "At this stage he will.''

Meanwhile, a number of Roosters stars are considering legal action against The Sydney Morning Herald over allegations they threw their final game against the Cowboys.

"We have consulted a solicitor who thinks we've got a very strong case,'' a senior Roosters player said. "All 17 players who played that day in Craig Fitzgibbon's farewell match are now under suspicion because of what the Herald has printed."

"To throw a game is the lowest act, particularly in Fitzy's last match. All our reputations have suffered because of the false stories they've been printing."

"Our legal advice is that all 17 players could launch a class action against the newspaper.''

Noyce is supporting the players in their denial of match fixing.

"In our previous three games we were beaten by a combined total of 90 points,'' Noyce said, "On 12 occasions during the season we got beaten by more than 13 points."

"Look, 2009 was a disastrous year for the club on and off the field but the big theme of our off-season has been about implementing change and we feel we've put the right systems and people in place to turn the club around.''

In the wake of the betting allegations, Racing NSW boss Peter V'landys has warned punters about the risks in sports wagering.

"In racing, we spend $4million a year to have the best stewards in the country to protect the punter,'' V'landys said.
"The sports codes don't have anything in place to handle this sort of issue. There is no protection for punters in sports betting.''

**** me Rothfield is a piece of gutter trash, of he had any clue he would know that the samsung deal was a year to year basis over the past 6 years as it was.

At the same time Samsung has also pulled out of sponsorship of the melbourne Victory as well.

While our year has been crap and our "antics" did nothing to help keep samsung as a sponsor, we are not the only ones that they are dropping as sponsors.

Then the dipshit goes on to state that Brian smith has a pathetic coaching record because he has never won a comp in 25 years............ Well rothfield, smith has not coached in the NRL for 25 years. he has coached in lower grades and been successful, he has coached in england and won titles............

**** you Rothfield you piece of gutter trash !!!

Samsung have dropped a number of sponsorships like Easts and Melbourne Victory because they are a major sponsor of the Fifa World Cup and will be pouring their dollars into the biggest sporting event in the world.

Rothfield hasnt got a clue, then again, he never had one.

Rothfield really has it in for the Roosters and for Brian Smith it seems.
I would have thought he'd need to be a little careful lest he defame.

Don't forget "Phillip Ronald" Gould as he refers to him so patronisingly.

                        We have the trifecta now.

Look forward to some real scoops next season.

Wests Tigers claim Sydney Roosters undercut their sponsorship with Proton
                              By Stuart Honeysett
October 20, 2009 Wests Tigers are furious over a last-ditch approach and alleged bargain-basement offer from Sydney Roosters that threatens to derail their potential new sponsorship deal with car manufacturer Proton.

The Tigers are hoping to hear from the Malaysian-based company as early as Tuesday on which club it will opt for and it is believed the deal could go either way.

The Tigers are particularly disappointed with the actions of Roosters chief executive Steve Noyce, who played a major role as the former boss of Wests Tigers in luring Proton to the joint-venture club in 2006.

The Roosters are desperate to find a new sponsor and generate some positive publicity after major backer Samsung pulled the pin on its six-year association with the club from Sydney's eastern suburbs over a string of damaging headlines this season.

The Australian has reported the Roosters' offer undercut the Tigers' bid by at least $200,000 and could include other contra in the form of possible advertising to help promote Proton's new model.

Tigers chief executive Stephen Humphreys did not want to go into any detail when contacted on Monday but said he was still hopeful the car manufacturer would continue its four-year association with his club.

Humphreys said he intended to contact Noyce soon to discuss the matter and he would also raise it when he visited NRL headquarters over another issue.

"We're very close to re-signing Proton and we've been working on that with the good people from Proton in recent weeks," Humphreys said.

"I am aware of a last-minute proposal from the Roosters which has been made on very attractive terms."

Noyce declined to go into details of the Roosters' offer but said he was shocked at any suggestions he had done something underhanded to sway Proton's decision.

"I've spoken to the guys at Wests Tigers and explained the situation," Noyce said.

"Obviously Proton consider there may be some opportunities for them to link with the Roosters and my job if we don't have a major sponsor is to get proposals out to potential clients to create win-win partnerships.

"Samsung were after brand awareness when they were on the sponsorship trail and they to their credit and with the Roosters and other people's help have now got great brand awareness.

"I'm a bit shocked to think anyone would ever think I'd do anything underhanded."

It is believed Samsung flagged its intentions to withdraw its corporate support some time ago and there was speculation the Roosters then approached Proton in a bid to sign them up and minimise the negative publicity over losing a major sponsor.

The Tigers have a reputation as a relatively cleanskin club under the watchful eye of veteran Test coach Tim Sheens and to counter this obstacle it is believed the Roosters offered Proton a much cheaper deal to sweeten the pot.

The Tigers are bitterly disappointed given they had been working hard on a deal with Proton which, like other major companies, was re-evaluating its position on sponsorships as it continued to battle the effects of the global financial crisis.

However, it is understood a positive upturn in sales in the last few months and the Tigers' impressive end to the season - they finished ninth and just missed out on a spot in the finals - saw the company keen to continue its association.

Noyce said on Sunday he was confident of landing a new sponsor before the club's opening game of the season against South Sydney in March but he would not slash the price of the jumper in the process.

He said the club was using new coach Brian Smith - a strict disciplinarian with a reputation for rebuilding clubs and restoring their image - as a selling point.
looks like we are on a prowl for a sponsor !
