Indeed and he was a part of that crap team, with crap structures and crap attitudes, he is also to blame.

He lacked good service from dummy half and struggled with decision making, now that he's fixed that and has improved his kicking game he is the second best hooker in the game.

He's probably 1% to blame. Try being a halfback and a hooker in the teams we had over last couple of years 2010 and 2013 excluded. Friend just didn't go away for 4 months and become the second best hooker in the team.

How much difference would Cameron Smith had made to us in those same periods? Little to none.

He tried his heart out in our teams but his attack was bland. Yes he did go away and become the second best hooker in the game, he worked on his attack during the 4 months and it paid off.

Smith would have made a huge difference, he has a presence that would ignite teams. If SBW went to the Eels they'd be in the top 8 because of the belief he would install in other players.

His attack was bland because of what was around him. He's not bland, never has been. Smith the person MAY have made difference, but smith the player would struggled just as much. Look at his performances minus slater/Cronk when they're injured/rested.

You don't become the 2013 friend purely in an offseason.

The attack stems from him, his poor service last year was costly at times. I don't think I've ever seen Smith without them, I have seen them play without Smith though and it's never pretty.

Yes you do, there's a reason he's the most improved player this year, because he improved. He obviously worked on his attack and it certainly paid off.

There are also countless other players who have improved over the off season, look at SKD pre-2010 and then the 2010 season or Barba pre-2012 and Hayne pre-2009.

I don't think he worked on his attack as much as he got fitter and was used smarter by the coach. He was always handy out of dummy half, but picked up a yard or two of pace which made the world of difference to his game. I had no dramas with his service last year at all, Seluini on the other hand, whilst electric when he runs the ball provides poor service and struggles defensively

Attack stems from roll on, quick play the balls, bending the line as much as a good pass from your 9. In 2012 50% of our attack were runs out of dummy half. I remember our back 3 frequently doing more hit ups than our 7-8 forward rotation. Storm have gone poorly when slater/Cronk don't play, wether its losses or scrapping wins without them.

Players improve sure, but not to the lengths Friend did in a much better environment. He's always had the ability and skills, his environment was just never conducive to showing it.
