  • Steve McNamara linked with Roosters coaching gig

England coach Steve McNamara has been linked to a job with Sydney Roosters next season.

McNamara, who oversaw a new era of professionalism in England's preparation for the World Cup, is also believed to be considering an offer to join the coaching staff of Bath rugby union club.

However, Fairfax Media has been told that the Roosters are another genuine option for McNamara and he has previously expressed a desire to work in Australia.
After losing Paul Green to North Queensland, the Roosters have appointed Adam Hartigan as a part time under 20s coach and are looking for someone to oversee the NYC team and work with Jason Taylor and Craig Fitzgibbon as an assistant to Trent Robinson.

McNamara, who enjoys a close relationship with former Roosters mentor Brian Smith, was under consideration at one stage to coach Parramatta next season.

During his three year tenure with England, McNamara organised regular camps for the players at Loughborough University, an altitude training camp in South Africa and was involved in the establishment of an annual Origin type fixture against The Exiles.

He also regularly travelled to Australia to meet the growing number of English players in the NRL and has developed relationships with journalists in Australia.

However, his relationship with the British media soured during the World Cup when he refused to discuss disciplinary issues within the team which led to Gareth Hock being sacked, James Graham stood down for a match and Zac Hardaker leaving the camp.

Graham, Sam Burgess and England captain Kevin Sinfield were all vocal in their support for McNamara after last Saturday's heartbreaking 20-18 final minute loss to New Zealand in the semi-final at Wembley Stadium.

Sinfield this week broke his silence on the disciplinary issues to praise McNamara in a column in the UK Daily Telegraph newspaper and revealed the coach had tried to protect the players from the media.

"He has done a wonderful job," Sinfield said. "He has had to deal with issues over the last few weeks that are unacceptable at elite level sport and he has taken a lot of flak on his shoulders to protect certain people.

"He has dealt with things strongly and that has laid a great platform for years to come, because if he hadn't been as strong it would have sent out the wrong message, not only to our squad, but the England Knights and the Under-18s. We are striving to be No.1 in the world and if we are going to bridge that gap we have to make sure that the off-field stuff is done just as well as the on-field stuff," said Sinfield.

"I am sure Steve has got a number of career options now but I hope he stays on as England coach. A lot of people have opinions from outside and question certain things and I get all that, especially some of the selection stuff, but when you are inside and know what is happening you realise what a great job he has done. Everybody inside has 100 per cent respect for him."

McNamara has said he would like to remain as England coach and told Fairfax Media by text message he was "not sure at all about my future" and had "lots to consider", but did not respond to specific questions about the Roosters.

Please don't let this be true, he's absolutely shite.

In the words of one of my coaching mates in the UK (trying to be as polite as possible) 'he's rubbish, he couldn't coach his arse to poo'.

No one in the UK rates him mate, expert or otherwise.

Ask anyone from Bradford Bulls (the team he coached before somehow he got the England gig) if he can coach....and you'll be waiting about 20 minutes before they stop laughing.

He makes the 2007 version of Chris Anderson look like a cross between Wayne Bennett and Craig Bellamy.

He coached the Bradford Senior Academy to Grand Final success in his first year as a coach at the club. Since joining the coaching staff at Bradford, he has been named as Bradford coach following the departure of Brian Noble. Bradford fans became increasingly frustrated with his team's lacklustre performances since taking over the reins in 2006 and following defeat by Harlequins RL (the 8th defeat in a row, the Bulls worst run in Super League history) his Bradford career came to an inglorious end as his contract was mutually terminated on 13 July 2010.

On 20 April 2006 Steve was promoted to head coach of Bradford[3] following Brian Noble's departure to Wigan. At the time he was the youngest coach in Britain.

In his first season in charge, he guided Bradford to the Super League playoffs before the club were knocked out of the grand final eliminator by Hull

McNamara was appointed Great Britain assistant coach on 30 April 2007.

His coaching career while at Bradford contains several unwanted records, such as being the first Bradford coach in Super League to fail to guide his team to the end of season play-offs and being in charge for the worst losing streak the club has seen in 20 years.

His time as Bradford head coach came to an end on 13 July 2010 as the Bradford board ended his contract by mutual consent and allowed him to become full time England coach.

As of April 2010 he was part time England coach until the end of the 2010 Super League season. He became full time England coach afterwards. He won his first game as England coach against France 60-6. This game was played at the Leigh Sporting Village on Saturday 12 June 2010.

                  Makes good reading hey?

The fact that he had the cheek to apply for the England job shows how low English RL had got.

so maybe trent has a vested interest in him.

imagine if trent signs a deal with the players and coaching staff, like for eg. if I (trent) can increase your worth as a player after being coached by me , you give me a cut of your increased amount of earnings.

so trent is now trying it on a failed esl coach. train him up and then unleash him. don't think so tho???

Obviously not from reading some of the English players quotes.

He's only 42 which is young for a coach, from doing some research and even just in that article he's clearly someone who likes to be innovative in everything he does. The hardest thing to do as a coach is to do what everyone else isn't because if you fail it looks like you have no idea or as you say perceived to be ''shit'', I'm sure if we're genuinely looking at signing him it's that factor that's the main reason behind why Robbo wants him on his team.

Outside of his 2010 season his coaching career reads quite well, it's not unsurprising for English fans to totally rubbish a player or coach after one bad season, anyone who follows English football understands the culture I'm talking about.
