He makes it quite clear that Smith hates players with big personalities. That's why he let Newton loose. Apparently he didnt like him hyping up the players in a certain way..Smith preferred him to lead through his on-field action.

    Fitzy-esque not Mason-esque.

Also prefers a more horizontal player salary structure with very few players on big bucks. New England PAtriots model he has read so much about. Why do you think Parra and Newcastle never recruited big name players. It's not like Parra didnt have the cash. Looks at their spend now under Anderson.

I'll doubt we'll see us recruiting the likes of Tuquiri, Jennings, Haynes etc in future years. There will be more of a focus on juniors or buying players on average salaries and building them up. Having more faith in players and giving them time to flourish.
Great post gunjaman Totally agree. It'll be just like the days when Gould setup his junior development program at the club. That lasted up until 2004. Lets hope there isnt a Ricky Stuart in the future to tear it all down in a single year.

Smithy will be great for our club, i have no doubt about it.

If there could be such a thing as 200% correct then that would be how right you are Melon. Our club has a cancer from the top down and I just wish everyone would stop listening to the poison pen of the Telegraph, and let Mase have a go this year. IF he fails then even he would agree to leave. He's actually a really nice bloke who has to carry around total slander on a daily basis. I seriously wish he'd sue the bejesus out of them.

Neither does the back ending of contracts, which a certain club north of the harbour are discovering right this very minute.

Unless the player is exceptional, like an Inglis or a Hayne, then the days of the $350K+ salary will become obsolete.

Souths don't get it, they have a disproportionate amount of the cap in big lumbering forwards. I know Lang likes big forwards, but I don't know whether they will cope in the modern game and the second phase play.
You only have to look at the Storm to prove your point as being entirely inaccurate. There is effectively two schools of thought.

Certain clubs such as the Saints have more recently taken the leveling out approach, hence why Saints let go of that bloke to Parramatta. Melbourne on the other hand have invested heavily in key positions providing a solid foundation and an excellant attacking force. This has worked well for them and they openly admit this is their strategy.

I do agree with you on Souths. A very expensive forward pack indeed.

As you or another poster said above, Smith generally takes the level approach which I have no issue with. Smith changed Parramatta forever.

Was one of our better players in a side being coached poorly yet through divine intervention made the top 4. He has barely done anything wrong. He had a few beers when he shouldn't have and he pissed on the street. Who cares. This year he was recovering from a knee recronstruction and again was by far not our worst player.

As for him and his big mouth so be it. There is one or two in every team. The Roosters needed to put in place an environment to manage him. Not control him. The Saints had similar issues when they had a young coach and so too Souths this year.

If Mason was playing under Smith he would excel. I really hoped he would be playing this year as I am certain used in the right way he will be a very dominating player.

Fittler as much as I admire the bloke for his playing days was not the coach we needed.
            Welcome to The Chookpen Willie.

              That's true.

              But Mason is a cancer.

              A self-induced one for sure.

              But still a cancer.

He has to be cut out.

SYDNEY Roosters forward Willie Mason has spoken about the impending moment when his NRL career is officially over.

Mason completed drills with departing Rooster Craig Fitzgibbon yesterday after the Roosters gave the former Test player three weeks leave to explore playing rugby union in Japan.

The former Test player is unwanted at Bondi and will only remain next year if unable to find a new club.

"I'm happy with everything I've done in league and can walk away from the game and be quite satisfied,'' Mason told Channel 9

"It's business and I give them (Roosters) full respect for giving me an opportunity to have a couple of weeks off.

"I don't think a lot of clubs would do that.

"It would be a massive challenge if I did go over there (to Japan).

"I don't see many people going over to Japan from league.''

                  Mate,

                  Finch was the cancer.

Mase is just a large sun spot.

                    How so the Storm?

When was the last time they went to market and tabled a big money offer for a player. They, in fact, are doing a remarkable job in recycling players.

The last time they were in a bidding war was for Israel Folau, and they conceded on that one. Who had heard of Inglis, Slater, Smith, Folau or Cronk prior to them breaking through at the Storm?

There are still clubs prepared to go high on player salaries, but I wouldn't count the Storm in that group.

he hasnt got it in him to be able to shove it up the knockers arse anymore - at least not more than once or twice a season and that is not good enough. he can only do it once or twice a season now, like he did against the dogs early in 08. thats how he should be playing most games during the year but instead its the opposite.

he hasnt got it in him anymore, he's got no heart and is a bludger.

But Ryles has? Do you support the club's signing of Ryles? (if it has done so). Careful how you answer...it may expose your real line of thinking.

i have always liked ryles as a prop. i fully support an experienced coach like smith being able to get the type of player that he wants, if he really wants ryles then i am happy to support that decision.

i know one thing for sure, ryles will run all day and take a million hitups and make a lot of tackles unlike the bludger who does 2 runs 3 tackles and then comes off.
