  • Roosters give Willie Mason two more weeks leave to find a new club

WHAT part of go away don't you understand?

That was effectively the message Roosters officials sent to Test star Willie Mason yesterday by granting him an additional two weeks leave to find a new club for 2010.

Mason, who has a year to run on his NRL contract, has just been on a week's leave to negotiate with up to five Japanese rugby union clubs.

He has now been told he is not required back at Roosters training until November 23.

"We have extended his leave by two weeks," Roosters chief executive Steve Noyce said.

"As has been well-documented, Willie has been in Japan negotiating with clubs. The club has decided to allow Willie and his manager to continue those negotiations. Willie only got back yesterday and we understood he had a number of meetings in Japan.

"There are always follow-up talks required in these situations, so we have provided Willie with another fortnight off to follow up those discussions."

Mason's manager, Greg Keenan, would not discuss the Mason issue when contacted by The Daily Telegraph last night.

There were rumours Cronulla would be interested in Mason if he left the Roosters, but that was rejected as rubbish by CEO Richard Fisk.

What part of "I still have a $400K contract and as such, I'm the one calling the shots", don't you understand?

This might be true but it doesn't mean we have to play him or require him to attend training.

If he doesn't get another club he'll be paid to sit the season out.

He will never play for us again.

And what an embarrassing outcome for Roosters "management" that would be

Not alot they haven't already embarassed themselves with.
The Roosters management once a leader is now a joke.
Pandering to Mason is a stepbackwards, if he had to sit out, it would be a show of strength.

Couldn't agree more. They are an utter embarrassment.

I know it's a view that doesn't sit well with a lot of Roosters supporters, but Politis has become a cancer. The club will never be strong while he's in charge. He's single handedly given the club it's unfortunate but entirely deserved "transit lounge" reputation. He employs people in senior football club operational roles, but then insists on having the power of veto when it comes to roster management. FFS Nick! Let them do the job you pay them to do! And let them live or die by their own decisions - not your decisions

I hope Mason does go. But if no-one else will take him, they must try and get him motivated and get him producing on the field next season. Having him sit out would be laughable. If he doesn't pull his finger out, he can play for Newtown, but he doesn't sit out.

He will not sit the season out.. If he does then his career is effectively over as he will not get a contract elsewhere in that scenario other for a bargain basement sum meaning he would lose out in the long run.. Sitting the season out rules out any chance of a move to the UK due to there visa regulations.

I love how everyone thinks Nick runs every part of the club... maybe he's down there at training now teaching them a pet play.

Nick Politis does not have anywhere near as much of a say as many people seem to want to build up in their heads.

Its not just Politis, and I would gladly have Politis around the club as long as he keeps his (and others) nose out of the running of the team.

Its not about running every part of the club, its about taking bits of control away from the people that should have it, ie the coaches.
Don't believe it, ask Adrian Lam.
