  • Our attack

I know we had hardly any ball in the Souths 20m last night so it's probably not right to judge, but after looking at last nights match and the WCC, I am starting to wonder what has happened to our main attacking play last year, where we used two forwards as lead runners and had Maloney sweeping out the back, and Pearce had to choose either option. I know Robbo and the players have said that we have to improve and expand our options, but that play was so effective last year and I can't see how any defences can really stop it consistently? I understand we need to add versatility to our play but I hope we don't scrap this play because it was our main attacking weapon last year and worked so well.

I dunno maybe we have tried to use it and execution is still lacking, which is understandable so early on, or we have used that play and I have just missed it, but I hope it will continue to be used. There was an article on Fox Sports about it being so effective this week too.

    What's everyone's thoughts?

There were two clear scoring opportunities where the last pass went to ground:

    - Guerras ? forward pass to Jennings when we had a massive overlap.
    - Minis drop ball running off SBW close to the line.

You have to convert those chances to win games.

I also noticed that Souths totally took out Tupous aerial assault with Champion impeding his run EVERY SINGLE TIME (in an illegal fashion but they hid it pretty well).

We on the other hand allowed Souths to win the ball uncontested. Someone needed to run Goodwin off his line when he scored. Usually it's the centres job.

We just played most of the night bunched in the middle. No real angles. The speed of the play the ball was pretty slow as well.

We were unfit and behind the 8 ball so no one really wanted the ball.

        We'll be right...

Our halves went sideways continually looking for a magic ball to put a player through the hole instead of going straight at the line Had they run a little starighter at the line I think we would have made a line bereak last night

Hard to find runners when they are all bunched up behind the halves.

the first 5-10mins of the second half we were going up the middle very effectively and looked great, then we went for a try after a penalty and lost it... souffs went down our end the next play and knocked it on but the refs gave them the feed...then in that set they got the dropout...then they scored and the the rest is history.. momentum is a funny thing and i dont think anyone uses it as much as souffs.. when there on a roll there hard to stop but if you stop any momentum they look very average. We will be fine in attack i saw glimpses last night but it just felt souffs had so much momentum the whole night (Mostly due to the back to back penalties) and although many of those calls were bad it was the calls we DIDNT get that make me angry.

I was referring to that 15 minute period in the 1st half after we scored when we were on top The halves ran side ways continually trying to suck the outside defender in to them to put a player through a hole when had they ran a little straighter this would have put more pressure on the defensive line rather than going across field like they did

It wa salso done twice in this manner in the 2nd half It is an aspect of both the halves game that needs to be eradicated quickly

But most of the game the forwards weren't offering anything & had hands on hips not getting & getting their hands dirty. I just put it all down to ring rust

Forget attacking, our forwards just weren't going forward all night. Everything comes off the back of that. The best we looked was when we got some penalties that gave us field position because we sure as hell didn't earn any ourselves.

Back to the basics, hold the ball, run hard, kick long.

We can only begin to worry about our attack when we've earnt the right to actually attack.

                    63m for JWH
                    50m from Moa
                    33m from FPN
                    60m from Napa

                    That'll do it...

AS I said I am mainly commenting on what I saw in the 15 minute period in the match we were on top

That's actually about 3m more than his career average.

                          Impressive stuff from Frank-Paul.
