  • JWH short passing

The work that Trent has done with JWH this year RE: his short passing game is evident.

At the line, the little no look. Put Moa over and gave Mini and Pearce linebreaks against the Eels.

Expect it throughout the season... JWH pulls in a lot of defenders with his hard runs, the short pass is brilliant at the line.

The support play was the real feature the other night. It's something that was sorely missed against Souths and meant that they were winning contact on most rucks because defenders weren't worried about men around the ball before the line. Napa and Evans made such great metres when they were on because they offered support to each other so often. It's something that Liu offers more than anyone else in the squad. It's obvious that TR sees this as something that Evans can employ to avoid getting dominated in the tackle. League is always thought of as a simple game. Run hard and tackle hard and you will win. But I think last week showed that for the smart coaches there is more to it than that. To win the ruck you need options for your runners (and the fitness required to provide that), good wedge lines from your forwards to compress the line before the halves can even think to spread the ball wide, and excellent footwork at the line from your big men to find their front and gain a quick play the ball compressing the line further. Anybody that thinks the game is as simple as run hard tackle hard these days is living in the past. And any player that can't understand the game and how it is developing is also sure to struggle in the modern game. TR is quite obviously an exceptional educator to our players in explaining the importance of such "one percenters". Jared's passing game is no doubt a product of that teaching.

I'm sure it was Jared in the second half charging at the line bringing in 3 or so defenders to stop him. Then out the back was a no look flick offload which SBW would have been proud of. Unfortunately Morts couldn't hold the pill for what would have been a beautifully constructed try.

He laid a try on for Pearce against Penrith in the first round last year with a similar pass

It's like Robbo said - we were always building towards 2014.

To win everything last year was just a fairly pleasant bonus.

But this team was always designed to peak in 2014, SBW's last year. And in terms of our attacking capabilities we're still evolving. The interplay between the forwards with the passing just before the line by the likes of JWH, FPN, Moa, Napa ... we saw it last year but you can see that it's an even bigger part of our arsenal in 2014. And coupled with RTS chiming in from fullback you can just see that we're going to peak at a whole new level come finals time.

Doesn't mean the passes will stick on the big day. But if they do, we'll steamroll our way to B2B titles.

That's what I loved about the SKD try in the GF.
Moa's short pass to SBW was perfect.

Unfortunately a short passing game in the wet didn't extend to our u 20s team, although they prevailed in the end.

Players need to expect the unexpected at all times...and do catching practice at every training session...a la our cricketers.
