Yeh it's awful, hope to he can make a full recovery. Watching it live was shattering, an image that will stay with me for the rest of my life.
Got to say the NRL's handling of the situation has been embarrassing too, as if Mclean wouldn't feel bad enough about being involved in the tackle the NRL have stood him down indefinitely for a later hearing with the judiciary for something that wouldn't have even received a week had there been no injury. Two players welfare is at stake here and the NRL have shown a total disregard to Mclean's mental well being, poor form.
I also found Steve Mortimer's comments the day after in poor taste, using such a devastating injury to get some bullshit point about the 10m rule across.

I turned away when they put the replay up, I can't believe they are still showing it.
Mortimer has his heart in the right place but he always puts his foot in his mouth. I have no idea why they still get him to comment on things.
I don't know how they should handle the Mclean situation, I think everyone is just feeling for Mckinnon.
What did everyone think of Smith's comments to the ref? I thought they had some merit but everyone knew the kid was very badly hurt, I thought his conduct was disgraceful.
Worst thing I've seen in 40 years involvement in the game.
R6 in the SMH it was reported that Ben Ross thru the men of league I believe have reached out to the family and player welfare officers have reached out to McLean.
I think everyone's taking the softly softly approach till they know better what McKinnon is facing.
This makes arguments about Mini seem pointless.
Just gotta hope for the best possible outcome for all concerned.

I thought Smiff was just trying to stop the Reffs from reacting rashly and sending someone off.
I don't believe anyone wants to see that. And I guess Smiff just has to keep his mind on the game while a tragedy unfolded in front of him.
I recall once I saw a bloke from the opposition snap his leg badly in a game I was playing in. I felt ill as did everyone on both teams. It was very hard to continue playing hearing a grown man screaming in extreme pain.
IMO it would've been as tough for Smiff as anyone out there, excluding McKinnon himself.

Hard to judge from the couch IMO.
I agree but he was whinging after the ref put him on report.
Horrible, horrible situation for the poor kid. I'm glad to say that I haven't seen the footage and I wont be seeking it out.
The NRL have demonstrated an elephant's touch with the whole indefinite standing of the Storm player down. Astounding.
Re the Mortimer thing, Roy Masters is in today's Fairfax press trying to equate the outlawing of the 3rd-man-in-around-the-ankles tackle with this tragic injury. Now technically he may have a point: The 3rd man in going above the knees (basically the hip area) means that the legs of the ball carrier are free to drive forwards, meaning the 3 tacklers have an awkward physics challenge when trying to a) stop the ball carrier, and b) get them on their back, and that may equate to more head-first falls. But I think its a poorly timed, look at me – I'm still relevant play by the increasingly irrelevant Masters.

If Mclean wasn't going to get a week for that tackle, then the judiciary system needs to be drastically overhauled. Hand between the legs, 3rd man in, past the horizontal, and drives into the ground. Not the worst spear tackle you'll ever see but certainly worthy of a suspension.
What gets me about the whole situation is Cameron Smith's disgraceful behaviour after the incident. trying to argue with the ref that Mckinnon caused it while the bloke is audiably saying he can't move his arms and legs. Then after being told to leave it alone by the ref, he then came back once Mckinnon was cleared from the field and AGAIN blamed Mckinnon for the whole thing.
****ing disgraceful behaviour from one of leagues biggest scumbags.

He wasn't 3rd man in and he doesn't drive. There's no precedence for that to be a suspension.
Does anyone have a theory as to why McKinnon put his head in that awful position?
When I first saw it I thought he was trying to milk a penalty ala Inglis. But after replays I just assumed he got disorientated. Perhaps even thought he was about to be upended, which never happened and ultimately caused the injury.
Just like to wish McKinnon the best of luck in the future and hopefully things turn out as best they can for somebody in his position.
As for McLean the NRL are a disgrace by turning this kid into a secondary victim. R6 is right there is no precedence for suspending the kid in regards to his involvement in the tackle. If they want this kid to appear before the judiciary it should be tonight. By standing him down the NRL are pre judging his guilt which is a disgrace.
