Roosters vow to improve their discipline

    April 1, 2014 - 3:38PM Darren Walton

The Sydney Roosters say there'll be no more moaning about referees as they vow to take responsibility for their ill-discipline and refocus on their NRL title defence.

The Roosters were the most penalised team in the competition last year and the worrying trend has continued in 2014, with the premiers being hammered weekly by match officials.

The 11-2 penalty count against them in last Friday night's loss to Manly followed an unfavourable 10-3 tally the previous week in Brisbane and prompted coach Trent Robinson to label Ben Cummins' refereeing performance in the grand final rematch as "unacceptable".

But after losing to Manly, having also copped a 28-8 round-one hiding against South Sydney when caned 12-6 in the penalty count, the Roosters now accept they need to improve their discipline and stop giving opposition teams a leg-up.

That starts with Friday night's blockbuster against Canterbury at Allianz Stadium.

"Robbo's had his little say and it's time to move on this Friday," interchange utility Daniel Mortimer said on Tuesday.

"We'll review some unacceptable penalties that Robbo says and they're obviously the head highs and the blatant offsides."

Star winger Roger Tuivasa-Sheck said with "other teams hunting us" in 2014 the premiers needed to be extra careful to stay onside with referees.

"Sometimes we've got to take ownership of ourselves and we've just got to make those marks that the refs are calling," he said.

"We've just got to be hard on ourselves at training and say that, if this is how it's going to be, then we've got to take it on."

Mortimer admitted to being "gobsmacked" by last week's lop-sided penalty count against the Roosters.

"We don't go out there to give penalties away," he said. "It's unfortunate and I can't explain why.

"But that's something we've got to work on. We can't really use that as an excuse."

While Sonny Bill Williams returns from a three-match suspension for another showdown with the team he won the grand final in 2004 against the Roosters, the premiers on Tuesday lost fellow strike forward Jared Waerea-Hargreaves to a one-game ban.

Waerea-Hargreaves entered an early guilty plea for a grade-two careless high tackle on Manly's Glenn Stewart.

"It's definitely a big miss not having Jared," said Tuivasa-Sheck.

"He's sort of like the spark to our aggression and, when he's on, all the boys want to follow him.

"It will be tough to have a week without him."

So now we've backed away and capitulated?
    Charming.

And what about all the penalties we didn't receive that we should have...in the said Souths, Broncos, and Manly games?

What about Cummins' coaching of Manly and penalising us?
We just gonna forget about that? ...and take all the blame for the massively lopsided penalty counts against us?

Gee, the war didn't last long before we gave up.

After having my rant the other day regarding how slow our club has been to react to years of bad penalties stats I am disappointed to read this. Either the club agrees that all the penalties we get are correct and many of us are wrong OR are gutless to follow through and put pressure on the refs to give us a better deal. That's why Manly are where they are cause they scream and shout until they get heard. No guts, no glory.

          Not at all BB.
Toovey's outrage late last year proved to be worth every cent of the $10K fine. Our articulate leader saved himself a hefty fine & in the process, IMO (& i hope i'm right) he drew a line in the sand by tabling past & ongoing bias from the refs putting the referring/NRL officialdom under the spotlight. Let's see if the tide turns!

Or you could look at it that maybe they know the more they whinge the worse they look and the harsher we will continue to be treated.

I've heard zero support in the media for our plight. Opposition fans don't give a fark. The Reffs aren't being disciplined.

So what good will come out of whinging???

Afterall we won the comp last year being the worst penalised side in the comp.

There is little room to move from what I can see.

I'm glad the club is gonna show a tough attitude and just play thru the pain.

            No more excuses.

            Use it as motivation.

This is the smart way to proceed.

I have to say I also find this disappointing. As bondi-boy pointed out, these statements by the Roosters only address the penalties conceded half of the penalty puzzle and seemingly forgets about the other, more egregious aspect of the lack of penalties received.

Gman, I hope you're right and Trent's articulate light shining presser bears positive results.

stsae, I see where you're coming from in regards to being perceived as whingers. Is it whingeing if the figures back up the complaint?

But who cares other than us Easts fans mate???

                    The media certainly don't.

                    Opposition fans don't.

                    Opposition clubs no.

                    The NRL nup.

                    The Reffs negative.

                    Whose left???

                    BongdiBoy???

I'm not saying there is nothing in the stats. I'm not saying it hasn't pissed me off over the years. I'm not saying the club doesn't know or acknowledge the obvious.

It's just this is the exact sort of negative stuff that details teams. Whinging only upsets the whinger. It's a waste of emotion and becomes all consuming and a distraction.

I'm glad the club is taking the fark you stance.

IMO it's time as a supporter group we learn to embrace the hate.

It's what happens when you're strong, like our club is again. Everyone lines you up and try to take you down.

We have to harden the fark up.

Personally the pussy whinging pisses me off more than the penalty counts.

                    I need alcohol.

                    I'm fired up.

I reckon we will know the players intentions over the next few weeks. It can go either way. We can moan and make excuses and give in and lose games. Or we can stand up, like we did last year, give everyone the bird and JUST WIN BABY.

                    Easts.

2 to 1 penalty count against us in the Souths game.
3 to 1 penalty count against us in the Broncos game [Thaiday clearly tackled one of our players in the air, no penalty...even the commentators pointed it out.]
5 to 1 penalty count against us in the Manly game.

So if the penalty count in the Dogs game is 7 to 1 against us, you want us to just say; "Oh thank you for that, master"?

From what I remember When Trent talked to the media after the game he wasn't so upset over the amount of penalties against us but the fact that we received so few. I thought that was what it was mostly about

Well STSAE, unfortunately we've, the club, have been silent far too long and the minute we say something, we retreat. I can bring you other examples of managers being critical of referees, not only in league but in other sports, continuously. These coaches/managers keep the heat on the refs and eventually the refs, (who after all are humans) question their decisions against these clubs and treat them lightly. The refs don't want the bad publicity and eventually these teams end up getting many decisions going their way. We seem to accept everything we get and that's why to the referees,we're soft targets.
