The game is so structured now with the emphasis when you have the ball on metres gained, field position & no mistakes. So to put on a move that would mean taking a blind risk for an unknown result.
When teams are behind by 20 points is when you see the most ad lib risk taking footy, sometimes it comes off sometimes it doesn't but all the 1st grade coaches have their sides playing defencive safety first footy.

I think they should master the short high kick off. Have Toupo, SBW, Aubs, Cordner & SKD practicing from Maloneys kick offs at training & perfecting the timing of their leaps so they nearly always get the ball back.
But because coaches worry about not getting the ball back & then the opposition being 40 metres out instead of 10 metres out it only ever gets done when a team is 20 behind & they become desperate & it doesn't come off because they havn't practiced it.

what about kicking for touch using the ball standing on a sand mound?

I say we remove the padding from the posts - they're too bloody soft these days!

the mouse trap... how could I forget?

what about the "softening up period" or when refs penalised both teams equally in the first few minutes to deliver their authority?

All our moves and slick passing etc seem to have disappeared down the necks of beer bottles.

Good point. They didn't use to drink much back in the seventies

We had a variant in our schoolboy rugby - the 'quarterback' would hold the ball up pretending to pass to the wiger and some big prop would run from behind him and grab the ball and charge into the oppostion forward pack.

Bombs used to be at the sticks, theory being sticks would put off the defending fullback as well.

These days, they're always at teh corners. Wonder why.
