I have noticed that in these situations the penalties that are given away are not for holding down in the play-the-ball but rather for offside which the opposition are not allowed to take quick tap restarts under the changed regulations.

Our 2002 premiership was won off the back using the Dominant (gang) Tackle to keep our defensive line set. I can still remember the heated debate between Stick and Opes over the interpretation of the Dominant Tackle which ultimately decided the premiership.

Trust me when I say that I feel your frustrations!! According to certain people on here, the bias by the refs against us is ok/acceptable for a few reasons such as cause of the tip sheet theory which they have been using the same tip sheet for 10 years. Only problem being we only have one player still with us through that time and have had 5 different coaches. Another reason why it is seen as justifiable by them, is that the refs don't like us because our team is from the Eastern suburbs, a rich area, and this is ok for the refs to think like that.

And of course this obvious bias against us by the refs is in no way at all seen as corrupt in any way.

The explanation is that refs go into our games with pre-conceived ideas that lead to lots of penalties against is.

They should referee the game in front of them without bias.

Get used to it though. It will take years to turn that bias around.

I find those stats ourtageous, but let's try it from a different angle.

the two worst teams are us and manly. since 2008, manly have made 3 grand finals for 2 wins, and we have made 2 grand finals for one win. on the other hand, the two best teams are cronulla and souths, who have not only not made a grand final in this time period, but theyve havent won a grand final since colour tv!

Interesting angle, but in that time Saints have also won and Melba as well.

Saints are near the top and Melba in the middle in terms of favourable penalties. So from this angle you can say penalties do matter. Also, if Easts and Manly had a fairer share of penalties, maybe we'd have won more GF's - 2010 comes to mind - if the refs were on the ball, (and Carney didn't choke and kicked that very easy conversion). the halftime would have been 10-0. Who knows what the outcome might have been from there?
