  • Taumata - looking for redemption

    Detailed by Alan Jones on the radio today;

After wasting too many chances, Arana Taumata is looking for another shot at NRL redemption

ARANA Taumata looks down at the mobile phone sitting on our table.
A jazzy, silver number resting beside car keys and sunnies. A phone that isn’t ringing.

“First time in my life,’’ he shrugs.

And right on cue we’re supposed to tell you this isn’t a redemption story. No, maybe this is about growth. Or love.

A schoolboy devoured whole by professional sport.

    But who are we kidding?

The whole point of this story is to get Taumata a contract. Returning him to the only thing he knows outside trouble.

Understanding, no, he will never fulfil the promise of a kid Wayne Bennett considered, privately, “the next Wally Lewis”.

But still there is still time to atone. To expand a resume that, right now, sees him holding stop/go signs around the *Central Coast.

This, see, is how the great wasted talent lives.

Working, training and, after a year withdrawn from all things rugby league, driving three times a week to Newtown, where he plays NSW Cup.

Age 25...looking for redemption...once rated by Wayne Bennett as "the next Wally Lewis"?
    Good mix.
Sign him up! before he gets away.

      100% true.

“My whole life, everything has come so easy,’’ the playmaker says by way of explanation. “Even during my last start at Penrith, I was on benders the night before games and nobody knew — nobody — because I’d play so well next day.

“Some of my performances, it’s scary to think I could play like that after partying all night. But the drinking, eventually it wears you down. Takes you dark places. For a while I was oozing darkness.”

You read thru his rap sheet, and shake your head, how can somebody waste a talent like that, and end up being the old stop/go man on roadworks, what does it take for then to learn, they have a god given talent that thousands of footy players would give a right arm for, and just piss it up against the wall.
I truly hope for his sake, he can get his act together, and properly support his young family, in the manner in which they deserve to be supported, hopefully through Newtown and on to us, is he does the right thing, surely this has to be his absolute last chance. In fact the NRL CEO, should forward him a letter telling him, that if he stuffs up again, he has played his last game of rugby league in any grade in Australia, that surely will make him see the light.

He is not a quality footballer by any stretch and is not someone the Roosters should be signing up, irrespective of his rap sheet. He can not set up his team mates or carry out a simple game plan. He is selfish on the field and is only the Newtown half because they have no one better. Believe me he is not someone we should want and he is not someone we will get.

I've been watching 'the next Wally Lewis' the last few weeks, and let me tell ya, he's not going that flash.

'Greedy, ball hog who constantly ends up running up his own arse' might be a closer description.

Besides, weren't we the first ones to sack him?

hes at a club now that can enable him to achieve great things, if hes off the booze and kicks on to where he was expected to be, no reason why he cant get a run inwith the current premiers, if he really is good enough of course?i wish him well, but its all up to him now!

He'd probably have to take a serious paycut to leave the lollypop gig and join a club on a minimum wage NRL contract.

Those council workers get paid a goddamned mint considering the crux of their job is just standing up and occasionally waving a sign. The ones out the front of my work at the moment even have picnic chairs so the standing up all day thing isn't even a problem

$38k is a huge amount of cash, the contract $80k minimum would be less appealing.. You say tomata I say taumata!

I remember Setimata Sa was the next big thing. But the booze got him.

Alcohol, it removes everything. Looks, honor, talent, integrity. What hope has a kid got when the bloody sport is sponsored by the piss?
