  • There is a big difference between him and the usual teen ratbags.

The usuals just melt into society.

When an NRL player acts like that there are massive consequences for everyone.

    He is a repeat offender.

Even though the police have dropped the charges I still think he should swing.

The only reason he wouldn't is because of his potential as a player and that should not get into it at all.

    Bring on the independent commission.

    • I understand what a few here are saying about the media, is it fair, I did that and they are just behaving like any normal 19 year old in that perspective I agree.

Unfortunatly we live on 2009 now not 1979 and expectations whilst unreasonable are so much higher and on the flipside so are the rewards. My problem with morons like Friend is they know what the expectation is and they continue to break the rules.

Exactly! Jesus, none of us were angels when we were young but for most of us that was 15-20 odd years ago when expectations and rules of society were completely different. The young people just can't away with now what we could back then - sad but true. I know that I'm glad I was young when I was.

The problem with the media scrutiny started when the footy players became full time professionals, unfortunately it was also when players began having far too spare time on their hands.

If the players want to give up the money and the perks, go back to being amateurs and regain their anonanimity (Ok wrong spelling) then I'm sure something can be arranged.

But I doubt they want that to happen. And most of the players are decent blokes who deserve their lurks and perks. It's the 5% of deadshits that cause the headlines - and unfortunately the Roosters appear to have accumulated at least 2.5% of them.

If we want the Roosters to prosper for another 100 years, and I'm sure all us supporters do, we have to accept that player behaviour has to be pretty much squeaky clean otherwise sponsors will give us a wide berth. There are too many other sports or clubs they can choose from to 'donate' their funds. Our brand has to one worth paying good money for.

And Uncle Nick's generousity won't last forever - neither will Nick.

So basically, the players have to realise that if they want to get pissed and aggro, pick a team mate's place and and get someone to deadlock the door from the outside once they've all turned up so they can't get out until they're sober again. Unlock the doors lunchtime next day. No harm done. It may be a little extreme, but so is some of their behaviour.

        • So I guess we don't have a problem with players getting on the sauce, just don't get in the paper when you do it? I guess that is the problem I have is that what some of these guys get in strife for is no big deal - in my opinion. The media potray some monster out of control when they in fact may not be.

I do agree that the sponsorship is very important, that the clubs image needs protecting as well but I can see the CEO's of the club having to front the media and by the look on their faces are thinking "FFS, you lot are being pedantic"

          • At the end of the day we are all mad Rugby League supporters here and will probably accept or forget about a lot of these indiscretions..

From a different perspective one must consider how it looks to someone not interested in Rugby League..(Some may not care)..

Newspapers rarely make things up, they certainly sensationalise the story..

For example, I don't know much about channel 7 and I don't have much time for Home and Away, but what everyone now knows they are all coke-heads..

Because of the small proportion of players that get into trouble, there is a generalisation that all rugby league players are Women-bashing, drug-dealing, gang-banging, drunk rapists..

Everyone knew about Tiger Woods on the golf coarse but now we all know about him in the bedroom...

The newspapers only print it because people want to read it..

I am not sure what my point actually is...

PTB, compelling reading right to the end....I too am unsure

I guess unfortunatley we need to pander to the people that have an expectation on how society should act and what is acceptable and not acceptable. The right wingers. I just the team to win some games and I don't really care what they do off the field as long as it is legal and they don't hurt anyone.

              Enough from me I think....

It wouldn't matter if you were young now or young 20 years ago NC as whatever it is you would get up to on a weekend wouldn't see the light of day in a newspaper.

Nah, back when I was a young chook the footballers were still amateurs and no one gave a stuff about what they did. But they were also part time footy players who worked for a living just like the rest of us to pay the bills and get ahead etc.

It would have to have been a pretty major incident to get in the paper.

Also, mobile phones hadn't been invented, cameras were film only and there were no portable camcorders. Everything was chunky and clunky, including the jewellery.

Life was pretty simple back then.

I wish it was the same now, but it isn't and everyone just has to accept that. Take the good of modern society with the bad and make the best of it.

Our footy players get it pretty good, better than most of us. And if behaving themselves in public is a sacrifice they have to make to keep their lifestyle, then so be it.

No one is saying they can't drink and/or have a good time. Just be responsible about it, that's all. Everything in moderation.

Correct me if I am wrong, but didnt Mason and Nate try that last year and got dropped to Newtown for their efforts.....

So in reality even that wont work.....a lot of people around here obviously want mongrel on the field and choir boy off......a bit unrealistic IMO......

And I reiterate, I DO NOT condone any of the actions of any of the players in trouble, but sometimes the lines drawn in the sand need reassessing to a more realistic level.......

                        • Phantom, from recollection the reason Mason and Myles were dropped was because they broke the alcohol rule they had at the time, where you could only drink on certain days.

So whether they had 1 drink or 20, they were in breach of those rules.

Interestingly, the rule was relaxed after that incident, and the lads were told they could drink in moderation when they pleased. Unfortunately some took 'moderation' a little too liberally.

Most of us have no problems with the players drinking, it's what happens when they can't control themselves under the influence of alcohol that we have an objection to.

Every player has a different tolerance level to alcohol, some are affected by it more than others. What they each have to do is learn what their acceptable limit is and stick to it, espec when in the public eye. If that means they drink 3 or 5 beers less than their team mate, that's tough.

The ban was actually dropped after the Anzac day match and Freddy himself as well as plenty of others at the club that evening did not really adhere to any "moderation" rule.....I know this as I was there that evening......

What I am saying is that in one instance you say its a good idea to drink behind closed doors, and then you bring the rules into the equasion, that were totally unrealistic when the coach himself did not have faith in them......

We need some consitancy both in the team and in our fans wants and demands....

It is obvious that Jake has a problem handling his grog......a lot of young guys do, but they are not in the public eye....that is the difference.....and I can see that you and I agree on a lot in this discussion....
At the end of the day, you or I will not decide their fate......the powers that wield the swords will, and it wont matter one iota what we think will it.....

                            • Jake Friend has all the talent in the world, but just can't control himself when he is on the piss which is a shame because I really think he is a top hooker and destined to play at the highest level at some stage during his career. He can wave goodbye to that now. I think the club will sack him and make an example of him as he has had too many chances to clean up his act. But as a rugby league fan, I'd love to see the club drop him to the NYC team for all of next year, cut his wage in half and let him train in the NYC squad and not in the fulltime squad. Make him work or study like all NYC players are suppose too but don't give him up because most 19 year olds are doing far worst than this kid is and he just needs to realise he had privileges and now he needs to earn them back like any NYC kid chasing his dream. That's "New Attitude, New Beginning" to me.

                              • Unfortunately alot of the problem is the NYC, its become a bunch of kids under 20 that think they have made it. Not all of them but its a problem and not just at the Roosters
