Luke Phillips said that decision was correct. The interpretation is that if a player grabs the ball when it is beyond the line (mid-air) then the player is free to make the ball dead. Of course it completely contradicts the rule where players are allow to bat the ball back in from beyond the line but anyways.

NRL are masters of over-complicating very simple rules.
