Sydney Roosters have terminated the contract of Jake Friend

    December 18, 2009

Sydney Roosters have torn up the contract of the wayward Jake Friend following his third alcohol related incident involving police in a year.

The 19-year-old was arrested and charged by police on Sunday morning following an altercation with a taxi driver.

Friend was charged with using offensive language towards police and failing to pay his taxi fare after he was awoken by officers after passing out due to intoxication in the cab.

Friend was stood down by the club earlier in the year after being caught drink driving and he was also charged with assault after an altercation at a nightclub in June.

    More to come.

Ok probably the most sensible option. Hopefully we have now sent out a good message to potential sponsors and the public, along with Friend rejoining us in the playing squad one day if he responds well to rehabilitation.

      J Aubo is the man!

So now our hooker options are James Aubusson, Nick Kouparitsas, Olireti Samuela, Sam Brunton and the three players Newtown have signed in Keith Peters, Daniel Fepuleai and Nick Doig....

It's the best outcome I reckon.

Jake gets the support and counselling he needs to try and get his life back on track.

And the Roosters finally send a firm message to their playing roster, their supporters and potential sponsors that repeated off field incidents will not be tolerated.

Whether Jake makes it back to playing in the NRL is now ultimately up to him. And if it's with another team then so be it.

But at least he's been given an opportunity to deal with his problems with the help and support of the Roosters. That's more than what many other troubled players receive from their clubs.

a good decision by the club on this occasion, although there must be an agreement with his manager that he is not poached by another club during the rehab process, that smiling hangman bennet will be circling now! we all know how much integrity he has? not

Agree. Well handled officials. I know for a fact that Brian Smith is fond of this fella and stood by him thus the club offering him assistance.
IMO, if allowable of course, he could remain involved at the club whilst undergoing rehab by running the water/messages for NYC or 1sts.
Mateship is so important during rehab because we all know what one turns to when alone and depresseed!

Very talented, but he had been warned numerous times. Ok, he is 19, but that is no excuse.

So, he might come back to bite us, maybe, yes. But one day his bad ways will catch up on him in a more severe way than this sacking.
