My personal opinion is that I feel squeamish at the thought of him facing the likes of Manly, Souths or the Rorting Storm in pressure cooker finals. Losing the amount of blood that he did has taken a huge toll on his body and endurance levels and no-one has to be a medical genius to realise this.
The club won't risk him, his welfare will be priority. We can all agree on that. But this is Jake Friend we're talking about and 4 weeks could make a significant impact on his recovery...

    • Just remember, we have to win the week 1 match first, I really hope we win and manly get done this weekend, a match against penrith (also without a hooker) would be such an advantage.

      • I'm glad Jake is'nt as thin-skinned as SOME of the posters on this forum.

That's fair RWB and thanks for the insight.

May I say that it's the friends and rellos role to be overly cautious and concerned for a young mans welfare. I dig that it's natural.

But I'm guessing our hooker is a tough little mo-Fo who won't want to go out so meekly. There are many documented cases in all sports where participants have literally defied all logic and advice and ripped the plaster off and played in a big game or event. One of the most hardcore I recall is Chris Mortimer at Penwiff who post surgery in front of his teammates pulled a pair of pliers out and removed a pin from a broken hand I believe to play in a GF.

These days and with such an unusual injury I'm sure the medicos will have the final say.

But IF it's more mental than physical as Lydon has said, and the docs say he's physically able to play, I believe Friendly will return at some point this season ready to play.

May make a great story for the grand kids.

          You know it makes sense.

Then just read the factual bits I typed then. I'll repeat them for you:

Jake came out of hospital today
              He had 3 blood transfusions
He wants to play as soon as possible
He is yet to receive any type of medical clearance to play again as the incident occurred at 3am on Sunday morning and the surgery was a 12pm on Sunday.

Or as dense. He did really well in his HSC and his IQ is quite high, so that would make him a stand out on here for sure.

Jake was sent home today after 3 blood transfusions and no-one expects to see him back on the field in the near future, nor should they, as it was a very serious situation. I hate to burst the bubble of those of us, including myself, who want to badly see him play in the coming finals
You stated here as a fact that he won't be playing again this year. With all respect, at this stage that does not appear to be a fact, just your opinion.

It just confirms my belief that 99% of the population have very poor comprehension skills.

No-one has the answer to this question as yet simply because he was only sent home from the hospital yesterday. No team doctor will be examining someone in this condition with the intent of getting him back onto a football field in the very near future. Apart from the commonsense factor, which is rare on here and new to some of you I know, the injury has impacted his body just like a car crash would have, just like someone else pointed out. How about you stop the silly games of picking my posts to pieces and just have some good thoughts and wishes for Jake's health? I cannot believe the selfishness and thoughtlessness of some people on here. No compassion at all, just 'Where's our trophy? Where's our full strength team? When's he gonna play again?" Just let him have some peace and quiet to recover before you start the nagging..

Dunno what you're talking about. Everyone understands the seriousness of the injury. Its been well documented. Pretty much everyone who has commented has expressed plenty of compassion for the guy. We've simply questioned your assertion that he won't be playing again this year.

The only person nagging and calling everyone idiots is you.

No one has mentioned anything about expectation on young Jake. It has been your comments about him wanting to return immediately that has sparked debate.

                            • RWB,
Appreciate your updates. I know from your posts over a long time that you are sincere in your actions.

It would seem to me that Jake had surgery to stop the bleed. This needs to fully heal before he could even consider getting back on the field and would need surgeon sign off. Otherwise he risks ending back in hospital.

Optimistically, I'm still hoping for a speedy recovery to help our chances but not at the expense of his full recovery.

                              • Yeah - RWB, I think you need to step back a bit. No one has anything but well-wishes for Jake. We all want him well first, then back on the field.

And of course we want to think he'll be back this year - he's our best player. Why is that a problem? You can bet the wants to be back this year too.
