I don't know why so many Chooks fans put themselves through the misery of the 9 commentary - you know it will cause nothing but heartburn. I watch very few of their televised matches, Chooks or non-chooks for that very reason.

If you're viewing at home and Channel 9 is the only option, just turn the TV to mute and put the radio on for audio. MMM in Sydney do a great call of most games (so long as it's not Maroun). It might be a little out of sync but better that than having to listen to the farce that is 9 commentary.

I didn't bother with Channel 9 yesterday for the Storm/Dogs game, I listened to it on MMM instead and it was a far more pleasant experience. I don't reckon I've watched a 9 Sunday game all year.

Fox also have their own commentators for the finals series, which is the best way to watch the game on replay if you have Fox.

Do yourselves a favour, don't bother with Channel 9 audio - frankly, it sucks!

The only problem I have with the mute-tation is that, even with idiots blubbering nonsense, you at least get some crowd noise and atmosphere.

              Exactly.

It's the crowd noise you miss, not the sound of Ray Warren's voice that's for sure!

In this digital era it'd be good if they had a crowd audio option.

Does it really matter who they favour or what they say???

                Any commentator???

Really they are there as a guide. I can see what's happened so I'm happy to back my eyes and form my own opinion.

I don't let their opinions ruin the expierence of watching a game.

Sometimes I don't agree with the commentators view. Shit happens.

This is from Darren Arthur at sportsfan

Rabs and Gus routine getting very tired

With Fox Sports showing replays of the finals using their own commentary team, viewers have an opportunity to compare their coverage with free-to-air rights owners, the Nine Network. Veteran Nine caller Ray Warren holds the reputation of being the best in the game and his main offsider Phil Gould is considered one of the game’s sharpest minds, but their Abbott and Costello bickering routine and soapbox ranting is starting to wear awfully thin.

The Fox Sports team of Warren Smith and Greg Alexander call the game without the nonsense. They pick up details that are lost during the Nine waffle and keep their views on how the game should be run largely to themselves. They get on with the job of calling the game how they see it.

In the second half of the clash between the Bulldogs and the Storm, Melbourne were denied a try after the video referee found a tiny knock-on in a long sweeping movement. On Nine, from the moment the decision went upstairs for review, Gould ranted and raved about whether or not the video referees should be used, claiming the slow-motion replay was ruining the game and pointing out that if the play had broken down before the try, no review would have been made.

"And that’s why it’s so ridiculous, you shouldn’t be going back to that at all, you’ve already ruled on it. You’re killing the moment, you’re killing the game with this rubbish!" he exclaimed.

Before going on to emphasise his dislike of the video referee, he added: "If this try is disallowed it will be one of the greatest travesties in history."

"God help us, that was historic and they buried it," concluded Warren after the entirely correct decision was made.

Over on Fox Sports, Smith and Alexander watched the replays closely and called the knock-on immediately. There is very little point romanticising about a brilliant rugby league try if replays show it wasn’t actually a try.

There seemed to be extra details surrounding many plays which were missing from the Nine coverage, as Gould used his position in the commentary box not to inform, but to preach his views. Maybe it’s time Nine took a look at their coverage and had a word to Gould and Warren.

The problem with the Ch9 commentators is they are trying to sensationalise the game, when the game itself should be enough.
Gould and Warren's carry on regarding video refs is simply the most annoying thing about their coverage. Its consistent and constant.
Lets not forget they are wrong more than they are right.
But as long as the coverage rates, the idiots managing ch9 are going to keep them. I have a sneaking hope the decline in ratings may prompt some changes but I doubt it

Think Ch9 worked out a few years back that people were muting the sound and listening to the radio commentary. Now they seem to delay the vision by several seconds so its well and truly out of synch with the radio to try and stop people switching off the sound.

Even ignoring the actual commentary, how terrible does it sound when in the middle of the game, Rabbits goes into a commercial read for The Block, or The Voice or some other CH9 advertisement .....just sounds really tacky !
