Todd Carney's mate, who was treated in hospital for burns on New Year's Day after what the troubled Sydney Roosters star claims was a practical joke gone wrong, has leapt to the defence of the 23-year-old playmaker. Brad Smith, who was celebrating the end of last year with Carney and other friends at Airlie Beach when he was set alight and received burns to his buttocks, yesterday issued a statement to Channel Nine to put an end to the issue that has sparked questions about whether the former representative star has reformed himself after being sacked by the Raiders in 2008. ''I just want to set the record straight about the media reporting going on,'' Smith said. ''I was away at Airlie Beach with a few mates including Todd. We were all performing pranks and mucking about and in the process I received a burn to my backside. While a bit painful it was nowhere near as severe as has been reported and I hold no grudge against Todd or any of my other mates. This has been blown way out of proportion.'' Roosters officials are due to provide the NRL with a report on their investigations into the incident but Carney is unlikely to face any action from the club.



I think fans need to be a bit more resillient about minor issues like these blown out of proportion before the media gets its way..

Even being a bit more discrete. You would assume someone from the hospital would have seen him with his mate and all it takes is one person to ask some questions and then it's feed out to the media.

I'm not too sure whether this issue is as minor as you like to think it is, espec where Carney is concerned. It won't take much for the NRL to deregister him again. They're just waiting for the bloke to stuff up and he appears to be obliging them.

Agreed, it seems like most people love jumping to the worst conclusion straight away rather than waiting for the story's to unfold.

Just as with the fire "prank", it's not so much what he was actually doing, but more about the fact that he hasn't decided to just bloody well stay away from pubs. Still going to pubs and getting on the drink, after all the problems he's had, and before he's even played a single game for the club that's offered him another chance, shows that he's not serious about changing

Defend him all you like, say "he's got to have a life", "he's got to have fun with his mates", "it wasn't really that bad" etc etc.

But wouldn't you feel a little more confident about his prospects at the Roosters if he had said when he arrived in Sydney "I'm not going to any pubs over the off season, I'm focussing solely on training, because I'm really going to make the most of this opportunity the club has given me"?
