  • Willie's Leave Extended By Another 3 Weeks

IN THE off-season's most fascinating stalemate, the Roosters have extended the endless summer of Willie Mason by another three weeks.

The former international now has until February 1 to find a new club.

It's the third time Mason's fully funded holiday has been prolonged, meaning he will have done nothing for at least 147 days when the latest deadline arrives.

Based on his $400,000-a-year deal for 2010, big Willie will have earned more than $170,000 working on his tan rather than alongside his teammates in the pre-season furnace.

And it seems he's more than content to keep doing so, with no rival NRL clubs coming forward to break the fascinating impasse since talks with Melbourne ended last month.

There are plenty of coaches who'd like to poach Mason at a bargain rate, but their piggy banks are emptier than an child's Dollarmite account so close to the new season.

What an absolute disaster and Willie will continue to play hardball... The joke will really be on us if we continue to pay him while he plays for Newtown... Give him his payout and piss him off

For those that are still hopeful Willie is no chance of FG this year...

why are we playing this poker game with him? he really must have something big on the club?He isnt stupid enough to leave of his own accord, but give him enough string and he will inevitably break the code of conduct, hes played this game with the dogs and won it, so i dont expect him to blink!an intereswting tactic would be if he is so unfit, to play him on the bench in a trial, say in atherton, nice and hot, make him look so stupid as he will be so unfit?
whos made the call that he wont be near fg all year?

I'd rather them pay him to do nothing, then have them pay him out and he turn up playing for Melbourne or Saints for nix and winning a premiership.

So would I. Not that I think Saints will win the title this year, but Melb might (again).

Let him get fat and unfit doing stuff all. It's his future career that's he's throwing away here.

It's not as if he was ever worth the money anyway, even when he played. He was always getting money for nothing whether he takes the field or not.

So what are the Roosters really missing out on if the current situation continues??

That might be the case BUT the bottom line is this:
MASON IS DAMAGED GOODS AND A NEGATIVE INFLUENCE ON TEAMATES ESPECIALLY THE YOUNG ONE'S..... FRIEND & PEARCE ARE FINE EXAMPLES.
THE LAST THING COACH SMITH NEEDS IS MASON UNDERMINING HIM AND UNDOING WHAT HE'S TRYING TO ACHIEVE > TO TURN THE CLUB AROUND!!!

i'd like to think we're a bit better than that. who cares, if the club really don't want him, cut him loose, pay him out and he's someone elses problem. if he wins a premiership so be it.

I am coming around to that idea.. The longer this goes on the worse this looks for the club and their once again poor handling of a difficult situation..

If he is such a problem then they shouldn't be concerned that he is likely to help lead a team to premiership glory. It's not like we will be playing opposite that team on Grand Final day.

I agree, leave him sweating it out on the sidelines for the season
will not help him in any physical or mental way then at season end
he wont be much good to anyone, they more than likely wouldn't give
him a second glance. Sounds OK.

The only reason they are fishing at the moment is in the hope of
getting him for peanuts or the shells at least.

What are we missing out on good question other than the money we
are forking out & hopefully we haven't missed the lesson on how not
to buy idiots with big egos they are more trouble than they are worth.

I don't understand the big deal. He's been getting paid to do nothing since 2007.

So it will look good for the club by paying him $350k to go and ply his trade elsewhere?

I applaud the club for taking this stance.

If Mason is as disruptive as he's been portayed, then kudos to the club for keeping him away from the guys trying to get ready for 2010.

I would much rather see a moderately successful 2010 (make the 8) and see 400K sitting on the sideline than endure another farking 2009!
