i feel exactly t6he same lone rooster, with Carney at 5/8 we have THE UNKNOWN X FACTOR THAT WILL DISRUPT THE PLANNED DEFENJSIVE PATTERNS OF THGE HIGH LEVEL ORGANISED TEAMS? i guess if he has a roving commission that may work as well, but then were wasting the not inconsiderable talents of mini or Sammy at fullback?

What this has all brought to the surface, for me at least, is that the Roosters are an unbalanced side with the players they currently have on roster and the natural positions those players play."The price of freedom is eternal vigilance."

'natural positions' aren't set in stone.. Mini and Perrett have played alot of good footy on the wing in different points in their career. Mini was on fire vs South late this yr on the wing... lets just see how the players perform once the trials and first few games come around.

But then I think that instead of playing one player out of natural position, Smith will have three out of position - Carney, Pez and Mini ??? I'll wait and see but I just don't like the sound of it in theory.

I don't see a real problem with trialling it to see how to pans out on the field.
If there is one thing Carney does not lack it's confidence in his own ability. And confidence is imperative if you are to play fullback and that's where Sam Perrett fell down occasionally. Carney will fly high for the ball expecting to catch it and that's half the battle sometimes. And from memory his goal line defence was very good.
He may need a little help in his positional play but Mini can keep an eye on that, assist him with it and take over at the back when Carney plays a little in the halves.
I wouldn't be surprised if in reality Morbs, Braith, Carney and Mini switch around during the game. Braith starts at 5/8 with Morbs at lock, then Braith moves to lock with Maubs slotting into the centres. Carney then goes to 5/8 Mini to fullback and Perrett/Graham onto the wing. It's not as those involved in the switch aren't haven't played both positions before.
He may not get much attention, but Morbs may be the key to Smith's masterplan.

Why the need for all the switching? This is a side coming off the wooden spoon, who are lacking in confidence, and who have a new coach. The article also talks about them wanting to abandon the old play types and "structure" they had under Fittler. That sounds like excellent news.
But why not just determine where everyone's best position is, pick them there, and start working towards developing some combinations? Just keep things simple, at least to start with. Why the need to make it all so confusing with "roving commissions" and picking guys out of position?
Reminds me of the last part of Stuart's tenure. All smoke and mirrors about who'd be played where, who'd be picked, and what team would be announced an hour before kickoff. All they did was confuse themselves

IMO - An important role of todays fullback is to organise the team defensively. Minichello was excellent at it, Brett Stewart is the best at it, and Perrett was dreadful at it..
Carney obviously has the vision and the organisational skills to fill this role.
If you remember, the main problem with Anasta at full back was that he could not catch the bloody ball..
What is Carney like under a high-ball...???
