Three fans 'humiliated' by police treatment at Roosters-Cowboys match
    September 23, 2014 - 8:22AM

Three football fans said they were "furious and humiliated" after being detained at a rugby league match for using their mobile telephones in a manner an onlooker deemed suspicious.
Dozens of people who claim they were unfairly swept up by authorities in the past few weeks are pursuing legal action, as the terrorism climate heats up in Australia.
Three men of Middle Eastern appearance were pointed out by a spectator at the Roosters-Cowboys game on Friday night because they were using their mobile phones in a way that did not match what was happening on the field, Fairfax Media understands.
They were removed by police in the 60th minute and questioned for about half an hour. The three men were so incensed they contacted lawyer Adam Houda, who will demand an apology or take civil action on the men's behalf.
"It was a humiliating experience," Mr Houda said. "They are angry; they're furious."
A police spokesman disputed the men's accounts, saying they were not arrested or detained. "No issues arose from discussions with police and they were allowed to return to their seats," he said.
Mr Houda said he was considering launching a class action on behalf of about two dozen people who had been detained at airports in the past month and questioned about links to terrorism. Some were removed from aircrafts as they were about to depart. Most had booked their travel months in advance and had lost their money, he said.
He has also been approached by seven people who were caught up in large-scale counterterrorism raids last week who want to pursue legal action against the police.
Mr Houda's claims followed a warning by the Australian National Imams Council that they were exploring options for legal action after the "extremely unprofessional" detention of a senior member of the council at Sydney airport on Thursday.
The imam was detained for two-and-a-half hours for a routine baggage search, causing him to miss his flight to Saudi Arabia for the Haj, a religious pilgrimage undertaken by about 2000 Australians each year. He was unable to book another flight.
The grand mufti Ibrahim Abu Mohammad said it was "totally unacceptable for any Australian citizen ... to be subjected to this seemingly random, yet profiled, manner causing severe stress and unwanted inconvenience".
Mr Houda said: "It's getting ridiculous. The last time the Muslim community were confronted with such a wave of bigotry and racism was under John Howard but this time it is way overboard."

Do we want security in our Country or dont we? It is just so easy to point the finger at Police. After all, they are all power hungry and corrupt anyway.

If a member of the public gives information to a Police officer about what they deem to be 'suspicious activity', that officer has a choice to make. Ignore it,....... or initially, with the minimum amount of intervention possible, approach the people and make general enquiries, allowing Police to make an informed decision. The issue here, according to the paper, is that they were of Middle Eastern appearance. So once the Police clear them of any wrong doing, they claim they were targetted because of their appearance.

So what do the officers do? If it were 3 caucasions acting suspiciously with their phones would anyone take notice and advise Police? Probably not. When they are given the information and realise they are of Middle Eastern appearance, perhaps Police should ignore it, knowing that in all likelihood it is nothing anyway, and that they will in all likelihood receive criticism afterwards for making these 'humiliating' enquiries about innocent people.

Although I can understand the frustration of these people who were innocent and apparently doing nothing wrong, I do not see what option the Police have.

I would suggest in the current world climate ignoring the complaint is not possible. You dont have to like them, or respect them, but we have Police for a reason.

The proposed action by the solicitor Houda will certainly make Police think twice next time about doing anything at all about this type of information. And just maybe that next time...............

As I said, we all have a choice to make.

I was a NSW Police Officer for 20 yrs and this situation raised its head a lot. I always acted on it no matter what the people looked like and yes, the majority of the time the people were of middle eastern appearance and the information was false anyway. All I could do was be as respectful as possible and explain why I was doing what I was doing.

I am also the first to admit that there are some absolute belters in the job. Some officers that I used to be embarrassed about. But there are also a lot of fine young men and women doing a terrific job.

I would rather three fans be humiliated than gamble on a terrorist incident.

Its unfortunately the world our haters have left us with.

I would rather be inconvenienced etc. if someone feared I might do sonething ....I would actually be pleased our agencies are that vigilant and doing their best.

I'm sorry..and I'm sure I'll get blasted for this, but the fact remains you should not be discriminated against on the basis of your appearance. I'm not referring to the police here as they are only doing their jobs. So all men of middle eastern appearancea who use a mobile phone in a public place are clearly terrorists.

Agree with Corey and Jacks Fur Coat - I know I would rather they take a chance at offending someone then my family being blown up because the Police chose not to offend them. Its embarrassing and humiliating for the people involved however they must be aware that in the current climate the majority would understand the need to err on the side of caution. We attend footy to have fun with our family and I like to think that everyone attending has the same interest in mind however the people attending the Boston Marathon were probably thinking the same way and unfortunately once something has taken away your innocence it's not so easy to be as carefree.

Not at all mate. What you say is 100% correct. But as you say, the police are only doing their job, so what is the answer? There is none really. But at the end of the day common sense needs to prevail and u have to find a common ground. Each case has to be treated on its merits.

this is the world we live in, when it comes down to it its better to be safer then sorry.. you might "humiliate" a hundred people but potentially save thousands... its a no brainer, if you see something suspicious and it rubs you the wrong way then go to the police.

as for appearance.... thats the lawyer speaking... it is said they were ACTING strange on there phones...lets not assume there looks is why the cops were called.

“Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety.”

That was said by Ben Franklin in the 1800s and it still fits today.

That said, when the Holy war between Islam and the Judeo-Christian religions kicks off, your average moderate, kinda sorta follow the Islamic faith guys will be roped into the war like a card carrying member of I.S.

With those I.S. arseholes, it's literally join or die.
