  • Wests Tigers expected to unveil Jason Taylor as new coach

Jason Taylor is expected to be announced as Wests Tigers coach as early as Monday afternoon.

It is understood the Wests Tigers players will be informed of the appointment at a 4pm meeting at Concord Oval. The club is also expected to announce a new general manager of football on Monday.

The former Western Suburbs halfback is expected to return as a head coach for the first time since being sacked by the Rabbitohs at the end of 2009. Fairfax Media understands Taylor beat a host of candidates including Anthony Griffin, Nathan Brown, David Kidwell and Todd Payten to replace Mick Potter as coach of the club next season. All five candidates were interviewed last week in front of members of the club's new-look board.

After coaching Parramatta and South Sydney, Taylor has spent the past two seasons as an assistant coach of the Roosters. Taylor, who played 86 top grade games for the Magpies before stints with North Sydney, Northern Eagles and Parramatta, went close to returning to the Eels as head coach this year before a late backflip by the club led to Brad Arthur being installed as coach.

Taylor oversaw South Sydney's return to finals in 2007.

Potter's two-year deal stint was engulfed with off-field woes, while on the field the side struggled with an array of injuries.

Do you feel Potter will replace JT?

Apparently Trent offered Mick Potter the Under 20s gig when he came back to Aus if he didn't get the TigPies job. So it wouldn't surprise me if it was now a straight swap in we get Potter as an assistant coach and TigPies get JT.

Potter seems to have done a fine job with the TigPies younguns. It was the senior blokes who stuffed him over because the lunatics have been running teh asylum there.

I really don't like losing assistant coaches to rival teams but I guess the Roosters and Trent should take it as a compliment.

You would hope that JT would have made it a condition of his taking the job that he had authority and control over the lunatics. The TigPies have a new board that the players so far would not have much influence over and hopefully it stays that way.

This is a chance for the TigPies to start afresh and let the mistakes of the past be just that - the past. If the club stuffs this up, there won't be club in the next 10 years I reckon. There is only so much the NRL will do to help a club who won't help itself.

I wonder whether JT has some close relationships with any of our players and will offer them roles in his new club?

I think after two years some fresh faces and ideas not a bad thing, as much as it seems (as an outsider) that Taylor has done a sensational job here.

Potter has done great stuff with tigers fullbacks (structures) which may be perfect for RTS transition... Outside of that it will be interesting acquisition-whoever takes JT gig.

Might even convince them that we would accept a direct swap for Aaron woods plus 100k.

Good luck to JT, he's got a pretty sweet young squad to build up over there.....if Farah doesn't be a dick they'll make the 8 next season.

Two player changes since last year. LOD gone and Morts half way through season
One off the field change with Paul Green replaced by the Englishman (Norton?) as assistance coach.

I have questioned the value Norton brings to the squad and whether he is signed on for next year. Thoughts?
