This is getting ridiculous, they keep going on and on about burgess broken cheek and sattlers broken jaw. I've hardly heard a whisper about SKD's broken jaw, only 12 months ago!.
And some journo's I heard talking on the radio yesterday saying how it was such a great GF to watch and how despite the shoreline it still was close . Please it 30-6, it was a boring GF, unless your a souths fan!. These same people also said how it was a fairy tale ending and how they were the the best team all year, etc, etc.
The fact is, in 2014, souths weren't the best team all year. They finished 3rd on the ladder. In 2013, Easts finished 1st.
Souths had the best defence, yes. But Easts were a close 2nd and also finished with the best attack, 2 years in a row.
In 2014, Souths lost their final round 26 game and the minor premiership, 2 years in a row. In 2013, Easts won theirs, plus the minor premiership 2 years in a row.
In 2013, Easts held teams to zero on multiple occasion. In 2014, souths didn't even come close to that record.
In 2013, Easts also had to fight tooth and nail to get through the semis and into the grand final, remember THAT opening game against Manly. Although, admittedly, Newcastle were a little easier.
In 2014, Souths didn't have anywhere near the same trouble getting through the semis, with a little help from their friends the refs to get them out of trouble whenever they got stuck in their own 20 metres, (which seems to happen a lot, all through the season) one of the least most penalised teams.
Stats don't lie, Souths get more piggy back penalties out of their own 20 metres, than any other team in the comp.
Whereas in 2013, Easts were yet again, THE most penalised team, which makes their ride all the way to the Premiership even more of a REMARKABLE feat. Not only did Easts have to beat the teams, they also had to beat oppressive penalty counts.
And finally the Grand Final, like I said before, 2014, great if your a souths fan. Pretty one-sided if your not. Poor old Bulldogs were never really put up much of a fight.
However, 2013 Grand Final was a real nail-biter. REALLY, could have gone either way, Lead kept changing, both teams at different stages looked either winners or losers. Lots of media comments after the game saying how it had been such a long time since we'd had a great GF like 2013, how easily they forget.
So by all accounts, Souths in 2014, had a good year and a MUCH-NEEDED, Grand Final win (43 years is a long time).
But, Easts in 2013, had a REMARKABLE year and a fairy tale dream run all the way to a great Grand Final win!.
